Car seat for a toddler in a C4?
Just curious if any of you guys or gals have successfully installed a childs car seat or booster seat into the narrow sport seats in the 84-93 C4's...and if so, could recommend a brand/model that works well. My daughter is turning 4 in about 6 weeks and would love to go for a ride in daddy's vette, but her current car seat is about 17" wide and the seat is only 14" from hip to hip. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Curt

My owner's manual says you shouldn't put child seats in-if your child isn't big enough to sit and use the seat belt, they should not go in the car.
I would think by 4 though, they would be old enough, right? I remember going in cars sitting shotgun wearing a seatbelt when I was 4.

At 4 you can get away with the seats that can be separated. The back separates from the bottom and you just use the bottom. My 5 year old rides all the time.
and no owners manual is going to suggest any....anything that might cause a lawsuit.

I have an infant seat base in my 1993, the kind that accomodates a rear-facing seat. I drive my one-month old in it occassionally. The resonance is great for lulling her to sleep!
It is in my owners' manual, page 32-35 I think. It shows a pic of a rear-facing seat and booster seats, and shows how to secure the seat/base using the cinch feature. I'm actually able to get the base more secure in the Corvette using the seatbelt and cinch than in my wife's sedan with the child-restraint hooks that come in the car.
Maybe it' not covered in later C4 manuals because some came with passenger airbags. Unless these can be switched off, you can't carry a kid in a Corvette with them.

I have a Eddie Bauer car seat that fits perfectly and feels very secure. I believe the seat is more than 2 years old. So you might not be able to find one. My son love going for rides around town in daddies vette. I live in a small town so never over 35 with him in the car. Good luck

If your Vette is equipped with an air bag I would not do it unless you can turn the air bag off. I have a 1986 with the breadbox, which is not an issue.
My wife puts down a long towel over the seat before placing the “booster/baby seat in the Vette. This is a great age 4+ to take them on a Sunday cruise. For parades on the boardwalk in OC, he rides in my wife’s lap so he can wave.
I asked my son in front of my wife before a cruise, what do you say if we pull up to some pretty girls, he said “Hay Baby”.
My wife asked my son the same question and his response was “ My Daddy is married”.

Not to be a stick in the mud, but taking a 4 year old in a Vette isn't such a great idea. Air bags deployed, or turned off, riding on Mom's lap, nothing good can come from that in an accident. Just saying....

PM 89X2 - he had a car seat in his 89 that his daughter rode in all the time.

Huh?
I gotta go back and re-read the thread about the average age of the person here.

Are you guys serious? I know your talking about a C4, but my dad did that in his C3. Back in the mid 80's my dad would take my brother and I and buckle us in the same seat. Hell it was only for around the block. BTW we were 4 and 5 at the time about 4ft tall and 75 lbs a piece. The crazy part was that the two of us could actually fit in the seat at the same time!

I've done it out of necessity when my DD was in the shop. Did the phone book trick to get the level of the seat up to the base. Buckled the seat and did the knee trick to get it down snug. My son was 2 when I did this. (Also got pulled over and the cop said nothing about it. Seat was unoccupied at the time.)
The only reason I even considered it is because I don't have airbags in the 89. For your Z...don't do it.
