California Corvette owners inspection
Just wondering for you guys who must meet California emissions. I realize California is the strick est on Emissions but how come you guys don't get a sticker on your windshield like most States telling if your car has passed current emissions? How does law enforcement know?

In California our cars have to pass a smog inspection every two years. This occurs with registration renewal. If your car doesn't pass, you don't get a new sticker to place on your rear license plate. Drive with an expired plate and you are subject to a ticket.
I believe new cars are exempt for the first 2 or 3 years from the inspection.
The smog inspection system is computerized with the smog stations directly connected to the Dept of Motor Vehicles via computer. Pretty hard to beat the system. You definately don't want your car to fail a smog test in California as the system will red flag your car and its a bitch to get the flag removed.
Only in California do we have special gas that cost more and that isn't sold in the other states. I also believe we have some of the highest DMV fees in the nation. Example: I have a 1982 Honda CBX and it cost $54.00 a year to register it. My 1999 Dodge is $160.00.

don't forget the 'resale tax' they stiff you for when buying a used car. In total cost me another 1200 bucks to license my USED car when I bought it .. should just about cover one of Arnie's business lunches.
First smog test in this car coming up this october - I'm already nervous

You people are quoting the current discounted fees. Think 6-8 years back when the VLF (vehicle license fee) was figured at property tax levels, 1% of the actual value of the vehicle per year. Remember back when Arnold was running for office. part of his platform was a promise not to bring back the higher VLF fees.
My Superduty cost $800 per yer to register when it was new. Now 9 years later it has decreased to $368. I would guess a new C6 might cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $400 per year to register initially.
I am shopping for a C5 and expect to pay easily $200 + per year.
It's called the sunshine tax ...
