Black Widow in Grand Sport Registry... NOT!
Did anyone happen to catch the latest issue of Vette Magazine. There's a decent article in there on a Mr. Dave Bell's 1996 pseudo-Grand Sport clone. Nice looking car, well done, black with red skunk stripe, red interior, GS emblems, lotsa go fast goodies, etc, etc. Mr. Bell should be well pleased with his "Black Widow" as it looks very sweet, indeed.
But evidently that wasn't good enough, as he makes this claim on page 61 and elsewhere in the article:
Gosh, I must be getting more senile than I thought. You see, I maintain the official Grand Sport Registry's membership and VIN listing and you know, I just don't seem to recall adding Mr. Bell's car to our list. Maybe that's because membership in the official Grand Sport Registry (www.grandsportregistry.com) is restricted to owners of the 1,000 1996 Corvettes equipped with the Z16 Grand Sport option (oh, and the 5 original midyear GS's, too).
Good grief. :mad I have nothing against clones of any type. After all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and all that. And the GS Registry mailing list is open to all Corvette enthusiasts, too. But c'mon now. Why would anyone stoop to make this kind of misleading statement in a national magazine?
Don't know if the owner of this beautiful car is a member of this forum or not, but I'd sure like to hear an explanation if he is. I've already written Bob Wallace (editor of Vette magazine) about the obvious, er... misprint.

"Dave Bell's 'Black Widow' is the only non-G/S serial-numbered
Corvette to be included in the 1996 Grand Sport Registry."

The guy put in a lot of quality time and work on the car but it still isn't a GS.

i 2 have a grand sport clone. i would never expect 2 be in a real grand sport registry. :nonod: most of the people i meet at shows with real grand sports are pretty cool to me. i am currently installing 96 nose, tail, fenders & wide moldings & plan on repainting the car in the grand sport theme. i am also installing a 383 stroker before the new paint. :D i could see how someone with a real grand sport could get mad. the car is for a special few. i just love how the car looks (except black rims :U ) . i wish i just bought a real grand sport. especially now that i have more $ in my 84 than i would in a real gs. as far as this jerk making accusations about being in the grand sport registry it sounds like :bs !

I have a Callaway sticker, I wonder if I put it on if I can be in the Callaway registry.

Yes, the guy lives in Colorado (or at least he's always at the big Vette shows here) He's a real azz - a friend and I were looking at his car and he's all "Please watch your camera case around the car. This is the only black/red Grandsport." Load of :bs

Sounds like a bit of a "**** jockey", so to speak..
I just can't understand why someone with a nice car would openly claim that it is something it isn't .

there aren't any real grand sports in the GS registry are there? Or just the factory "clones?" made in 96?

read it didn't believe it. remember it will take a while for a retraction as it appears their issues are set up months in advance. don't know if the editorials are also.

Hey Hutch. Does that mean I can get my BumbleBee in the GS Registry? Just kidding. I haven't seen the magazine but I did see a car that looked like that at the NCM last Labor Day. :seeya

Saw this car at Vettes on the Rockies a few years ago. Real nice car. The only problem I had with the car was the 1/4 mile times he was claiming.
