Simple green (and a bottle of the blue version for real heavy grime), lot's of elbow grease, a case of beer, lots of rags and a few of your favorite CD's. And some aluminum polish to clean up after you're done the dirty work to make everything look nice.

Simple Green with either Blue (real dirty) or Green (normal dirty) and a bunch of rags....Comes out GREAT !! Someone once said a general spray of WD40 and close hood then 30 mins later open it up and it shines..but never tried that...not into the shine look for engine..just love it clean...

what is the best way to remove corrosion fron the aluminum fins along the top of the intake manifold/fuel rails, and still leave the brushed effect looking original?

A light (not a very abbrasive) steel wool. If ya do this, hose the engine off as you'll have tiny pieces of steel wool every where, then you'll have tiny rust dots all over everywhere. Or blow it off with compressed air.

I agree with the steel wool, but he has a '92, I'd not advise he hose off the engine, unless he wants to replace the Opti. Use the leaf blower.
