Default Autocrossing Article in Vette Magazine

Did anyone read the article about C4s and autocrossing in the latest issue of Vette Magazine? It said that C5s are not as good for autocrossing as the C4s, especially the 84 and 85 C4s which are supposed to be the best. They also talked about the low end torgue of the motors saying that none of the LT engines could compete with them. :yesnod: I thought it was a mighty good article about C4s compared to the C5s

Don't believe everything you read. Alot of the top SCCA autocross drivers are switching to the Z06.

The article did mention that Z06's were better, but they were comparing 85-87 C4 to non-z06 C5's

Sure does, bought at lunch time and read it. What they talk about makes sense. Here is last years results. Take at look at the model years and what number spot they placed. This year the stock C4's are in AS i believe and no longer in SS group. http://www.scca.org/amateur/solo2/na...esults/ss.html

Yea I forgot to differentiate between the C5s and the Z06s but seems like when people talk about them they either say they have a C5 or a Z06.
I have never driven or rode in a C4 with the L98 engine but it must be impressive off of the line :smash:

I have autox both stock 1991 L98 auto with 2.59 rear and stock 1996 LT4 6 spd. On small autox course it won't matter much but the L98 will have a very slight advantage. But the LT4 has a slightly bigger advantage if the course has a very long straight. Well, so far i have better my time in my LT4 even thought the suspension is way softer than my L98.

What is very interesting is I have herd Roger Johnson is running a 2002 Z06 this year instead of his 1986 L98.

It all depends on who setup the course.
how much of a race setup you have on your car.
the biggest adjustment nut for autocrossing is the one behind the wheel

They must not have done their research on this one, a C5 won the national title 2 years ago, a non-Z06, with Kurt Ormiston behind the wheel. Like Brian said above, it depends on many things, especially course design. As far as LT1's not being competitive, that is also a bunch of bull hockey. I ran a 92 LT1 very sucessfully against some very fast RX7tt's, plus Mathew Braun was the highest placing Corvette one year with a dead stock 93 Z07 (3rd or 4th if memory serves).

One thing that is very true, the L98 is the best for quick bursts of acceleration from low speed. An L98 is the choice to have for short, tight, courses. I have said this for years, all Corvettes are good for Autox, it just depends on the course. My best guess for slowest to fastest autox Corvettes would only have a spread of 1/2 a second. I have run many different configuration Corvettes over the years, trust me, they are all good. If you are going to go for the national title, then I would suggest a 88-91 Z51 manual trans (Z07 for 91) (non-FX3 for 89 and 90) These would be your best choice for most national style courses, but again, it depends on the course. 84-87's are also a good choice, that style Corvette has done very well at nationals.

The above doesn't include the Z06, they are on a totally different planet from the rest of the Corvettes. If you can buy one, do it, they kick major rear.

Truer words were never spoken. Forget all the fancy stuff, learn to drive first, then mod the car is what I've learned.

I'm still learning. Nothing improves your time like seat time and a good instructor.

I've taken the McKamey school several times and will likely again sometime this year.
