Default 1985 4spd for $8900 too much

Hi, I spend most of my time on the C-3 side. A friend of mine has a 85 manual with 42k miles on it. It is in almost perfect shape. I have no idea what an 85 is worth. Can an 85 be worth $8900? If so I will post in the for sale section. Just trying to see if posting it for sale here at that price would interest buyers.

JMO.............. Sounds high to me. Pics would help in determining value here.

I know pics would help but I am just getting the feel of the C-4 market before I offer to help my freind out. I can say the car is near mint. It is white with black interior 4spd tans and 42K. The paint I would give it 8 out of ten (some small blemishes no chips or cracks) the engine compartment a 9 of 10 very well preserved, And the underbody a 10 of 10. My buddy is firm on the price, I have no idea what its worth, If you guys think it can be worth from what I described I will post it in the for sale section. I just dont want to tell my friend I will try this and then tell him he is nuts on the asking price later

No. most 85s sell for half that. Add some for mint condition.

At 8900 he will sit on it forever as you can get a nice 96 for that amount.

I bought my 93 for $6,250, it has more miles but is really spotless plus it's an LT1, 300 hp compared to 230 hp in the 85 plus the 4+3 manuals were problematic. I'm afraid your friend's expectations are a little high in this market.

I respectfully disagree with the rest of the comments on the high price. If it is near perfect, mostly original, and with low mileage, then his price is not too high. In Western PA, this Corvette would draw serious buyers at that price. Of course the economy is not doing well and that could impact the interest. There are not that many nice '85 Corvettes for that price around here. It sounds like the next owner can spend one's time just enjoying it.

It seems that the opinions on C4 values are always low here on this Forum. I would expect the opposite, especially on clean examples like this. Spotless Corvettes can find a good dollar if marketed the correct way. I know because I have marketed Corvettes that garnered a good dollar even though many other Corvette owners disagreed. This particular C4 sounds like an excellent purchase for the first time buyer wanting to enjoy the Corvette hobby. It most likely doesn't need money poured into it based on your description. For a few thousand less, a buyer would most likely be purchasing a high mileage, poorly maintained, and worn out Corvette. A few thousand dollars more can deliver great value!

Market it on Auto Trader, Corvette classified web sites, and other venues instead of this forum. My feeling is this particular C4 can fetch $8,500 or higher if the seller is patient until an appreciative Corvette buyer comes forward. They're out there too.

Best of luck.

any car is only worth what someone is willing to pay.

It might be difficult to find someone to pay that much.

It's not an oppinion its what they sell for right now. I too wish they were worth more.. if he list the car in the area where I live for that much he will never sell it.
I bought my 91 with 48k on it for $5500 it needed a fender and an intake gasket.

I agree that a nice C4 could sell for $8500 or more but it would have to be an Lt1 or Lt4.

Your asking the wrong crowd beleive it or not, people here dont want to spend money. These guys will tell you who would buy this car at $8900 when they could get a better ,newer car for the same amount of money despite having 3 times the mileage and nowhere near as good a shape. How can somebody make the comparison between this car and one costing half as much?

Jeff youre right about that, its a cheap crowd here but still......to THE right guy that car may be worth that but how long to find him, a year, two? Its defintely worth more than the average 85 but in reality the way things are these days I doubt it will sell for that much even though somewhere it may be "worth" it to someone. Most times people will go for the newer car given a certain price range.

Asked another way, would the average member on this forum take a 92 with 120,000 miles, seats worn, kept outside most of its life or an 85 in the same price range like this 85 in question.Theres no doubt it would be the 92.The only negative I see with this 85 is the garbage parts it was built with that will fail and need to be replaced if they havent already been replaced.

I agree Jeff. Many posters here are comparing Apples to Oranges. Here in Western Pa, a clean original 1985 Corvette at his asking price would result in a fast sell. The $5000 Corvettes are worth nothing to me, as they usually take many thousands of dollars to correct. And they are still worth $5000. Some buyers look for value and it seems that this particular C4 represents an $8,000 value.

I just purchased a 1992 Toyota MR2 (I love mid engine rides) that is low mileage, all original, has complete service history, and previously owned by just 2 adult ladies. It took many years to find (Very low production numbers) and I got it for a very fair price. Not a steal though. My 1987 Corvette convertible and this MR2 will never leave my garage for the ridiculously low prices as others for sell. Each one looks and runs as new and will continue for many years to come. Finding ones like these two took patience, persistence, and cash on hand. The $5000 Corvettes are bountiful because most are junk. Spend a few grand more and get a great one you can enjoy now and for a long time is always my advice.

Last, never try to sell here. I have got top dollar for many Corvettes on AutoTrader, Corvette classified sites, and local venues. Of course one needs to know how to market to find just the right buyer.
