Default New Wilwood brakes on the track beast... **UPDATE**

After more shopping around than I care to remember I finally decided to get a set of Wilwood Superlite 6-pistons for the front, and go with Wilwood Polymatrix pads and EBC rotors on the rear (rather than replacing the calipers as well) There was a lot of question about whether they would fit and pretty much everybody said "no." Hell, even John at CCW said he didn't think they would.

BUT, me being who I am decided that I was going to find out for myself. I did a LOT of measuring, and even made a 1:1 scale cardboard cutout of the assembly to fit inside of the wheel. Everything seemed to fit so why not try?!

I haven't had a chance to try them out yet, but everything fit together perfectly and the install was amazingly simple. My biggest glitch was that Wilwood recommends not using OEM lines. I had steel braided lines to my stock calipers and thought I would be ok. Turns out that the fittings are completely different (which makes sense). A few calls to Wilwood and I had a set of lines on the way. I still have to change the fluid in the whole system, give them a good bleeding, and finish working on how to keep them cool. Can't wait to get it out on the track again!

The old...

The NEW!!

Working on getting the calipers aligned properly

VOILA!!

Plenty of clearance all around

Nice! It's hard to tell in the pictures, how thick are the rotors?

The overall thickness is about the same as stockers... maybe just a hair more (I didn't measure). however, the thickness of the material is quite a bit more than on the OEM NAPA's that I had.

Is that the kit from Wilwood? Do you have a part number? Did you get those from Wilwood or someone else?

It is the kit from Wilwood. The part number is 140-8337. I got them from someone else who is a friend of mine and got me an unbeatable price. However, I looked around a LOT and by far the best place to go is either Summit Racing or DRM (vendor). It is a little cheaper from Summit, but the guys at DRM really know their stuff and can actually provide support once you buy it. If I hadn't had an awesome deal come through, I was going with DRM.

You will also need to get a brake line kit to get it all to work since the fittings are different. It is 220-8338. I got that straight from Wilwood because Summit and Jegs both had a 3 week backorder.

Make sure you Safety Wire the Rotor Hat Bolts if you haven't already. Also, the rotor hat bolts should be torqued to 185 In lbs.

Where is the 185 from? Wilwood says 85.

Oops, my bad typo.

You're correct, it's 85 In lbs, it's been awhile since I torqued the rotor hat bolts.

Whew! Had me worried there for a minute

It sure doesn't seem like 85 in/lbs is much at all.

That is the same setup I have in boxes to put on mine when I get a chance. I did a mock up install on a spindle I had laying around and they did fit under a ZR1 wheel..but could use a 1/8 inch spacer just for clearence issues.

Since you track the car would you be interested in the 4 piston to go on the rear? Uses a 13" rotor on the rear w/ no parking brake

I finally got out on the track with the new setup, and all I can say is WOW!!!!!

I never imagined that the C4 could stop like it does now. I was able to brake so much deeper into corners than I thought I could. I had a few other mechanical issues that kept me from having as much time on the track as possible so I didn't get the chance to take them to the limit, but my initial assessment is A+.

On a side note, the pad wear seems amazing so far. At the rate it is going, a set of pads will last at least 2-3 times as long as the Hawk/Carbotech did with the stock calipers.

Good deal. If ever you decide to drive it on the street. Use a stock 13 rotor and I think its a 16mm pad and yuo can save the good stuff. I assum its a 1.25 rotor compaired to the 1.1 stock.

FYI, the kit details the rotor as 12.88x1.1" They are basically stock sized. Looks like a nice kit though, and sounds like they worked well.

To the OP, did you use the included pad compound on the track? Or did you order something more aggressive? A friend of mine has the same brakes on his ZR-1, and was very disappointed with the included pads. He called Wilwood and got some more aggressive stuff and it transformed them.

My Baer calipers were the same way, they came with some sissy ceramic low-dust pad, but really sucked as far as performance. A pad swap did wonders. I guess most 6-piston buyers are waxers?

FYI........A simple pad change he can go to 1.25. You can get a 1.25 12.88-14.25 inch rotor front and rear just as can a 1.1 in 12.88-14.25 front and rear. 1.38 up to 16 inch front and rear. And as i stated I assumed he got the 1.25.

I used the ones that came with the kit to test everything out, but when it hit the track it had the Polymatrix A compound racing pads. HUGE difference.

I have the 13x1.1s on it (actual is 12.88 like you said) because I still run 17" wheels. It is as easy as a bracket swap to go to the larger diameter if I go with 18" front wheels in the future.
