86 passenger side "Bread Loaf"
I needed to replace the carpet piece on the passenger kick panel so I want to remove the piece to glue on new carpet. It had 4 bolts buried inside the dash so I took off the bolts holding the top of what I have heard some people refer to as the "bread Loaf". I went a little farther to chase down a rattle and ended up taking out this bread loaf piece, which was a real pain in the ***. Has anyone tried the flat, replacement dash piece that all the catalogs sell. I am just wondering how people like it and if they go back on easier than the original piece(I sure hope so). Any tips on putting this back together would also be appreciated. Thanks

I have the replacement flat peice and it basically just sits in there and everything around it holds it in. Seems to be OK that way but it does look a LOT better than the big box.
Did you already buy the carpet for the kick panel? I am getting ready to replace all my interior and if you need black I can sell you the kick panel off mine and save you some money. The carpet was new a year ago.

yes I already have the new carpet. I do need a kick panel for the driver side though as There was never one in the car when I bought it. Unless there is no driver side panel but I can see where it should screw in. Let me know if you have the piece. Thanks

I think C4's look kind of "naked" without the breadbox. I have considered replacing mine with a glove box pouch out of a third gen Trans Am. I guess you would still need the flat panel behind that.

That does look good. What company did you get it from? I just ordered from Ecklers but all the companies seem to be similar. I will save the old piece and let the next owner deal with putting it back in.

[QUOTE=H P Bushrod;1572238530] I'm a stickler for originality. The breadloaf is part of the early C4's mistique (It's a great trivia item also. Most people don't know what it was originally inteded for). [/QUOT

There was supposed to be one of the first passenger side air bag setups in that location, but for some reason it did not work out, so GM stuck the breadbox there. I will probably change mine someday

I got mine from Davies Corvettes but I do think they are all pretty much the same, I added the "corvette" logo just stencils I found online in flea bay. Thanks for the compliment, I did save my beadbox in case anyone wants to put it back.

The bread box was originally a safety device to provide extra padding in case of accident. It is an ugly thing, I have thought of replacing mine but I'm going for the original look so I haven't.

When I bought my 85 I wrestled with the idea of putting a flat panel on it. I also agree, without it the dash looks bare. The dash also looks too far away when sitting in the passenger seat. I got used to the loaf, kept it and like it. But that's just me, I like my Corvette's looking like they did when new.

Thanks for all the replies. I am glad I took it out, it was sort of like the "final frontier", the only place I had not yet taken apart to see what was inside. I was able to secure some annoying rattles and add missing screw back plates for some of the trim. The dash is nice and solid now and I did not have to wrestle with putting back in that Bread loaf. The screws for that thing really sucked to get at. Maybe someday I will put it back when I run out of things to mess with, if that's possible.

It seems like either you love the bread box or hate it. I put the flat panel kit in plain as one of my first mods, it wasn't to difficult. You could fashion your own and add whatever emblems you'd like. I used a piece of the stock bracket as a brace for the panel. It worked really well! Here's a few pictures:
The panel material slots in between the metal bracket and the edge of the plastic, holding the two tightly together.

I thought show mine with the bread loaf. In defense of them, I like the originality. Even though I painted the Corvette word and other dash trim. Something I think the factory should have done.
