Autocross - Top up or down?
I'm going to autocross my '86 convertible for the first time next month. It's all stock at present. Question is: Top up or top down?
I do not think the rules care. Does the top up contribute significant stiffness to a convertible (the X member is installed)? It's minimal but I'd guess the lower CG from the top down cannot hurt. If there is no good reason one way or another I'll drive top down just for the fun of an open car.

It all depends on what kind of autocoss you are going to participate in....SCCA "parking lot" racing requires a helmet, and you can do it top down. Which I would suggest, I had a 96 coupe I did SCCA in and with the helmet on I almost did not fit.
If you are going on a road course, for any kind of competitive racing, you will need a roll bar, and a 5 point harness.
The 86 is a great Vette for autocross, you will love it. Just get the rules for wherever you are going to hit the course.
