Default spare tire size

I have an 86 coupe that came stock with 16" wheels and a 155/80/16 spare tire. I put 17" wheels and tires on it, 275/40/17. My question is that I'm searching for another spare tire to replace my current one. Can I go with a 155/70/17, which was the stock size on later vettes with 17" wheels? I checked on a tire size website and it looks like both sizes are somewhat similar in size. I'm just worried that the 17" spare from another year wont clear the calipers.

Where have you found a T155/70-17 spare tire at?
From what I've head, they are no longer available anywhere.

But if you've got one, it should fit fine. If your 16" rim fit, I can't imagine having any issues with the 17" rim clearing the calipers.
Remember, these are "temporary" spares. Only meant to get you to the next tire repair center.

I havent found a T155/70-17. I was hoping to stumble across one. I guess I'm better off looking for the 155/80-16 then.

IIRC, I had to get mine from Tire Rack. You have to call them to get it.

Your 275/40/17 have a smaller overall diameter then the 255/40/16 tires that were stock, so using the 16in spare should not be a problem. difference is 3/10ths of a inch. You need to be matching overall height not wheel size you can only drive on them a 100 miles or so anyways and below 50 mph I believe.

Here is the thread you were looking for

thanks. Guess I'll just keep my current stock 16" spare. I was just concerned about it being 24 years old. I just checked the air pressure in it a couple of weeks ago and brought it up to 60 psi's. Lets see if it holds. If not I'll have it demounted and clean up the rim and remount. It is kind of dry rotted though. Anyway, just renewed my AAA today
