Default Can the cops take your car for speeding?

Or is this just another urban myth?
I have heard that if your speed is a certain amount over the limit that they can take the car.
Have you had this happen or know of anyone it has happened to?
I was at a car show this weekend and the topic came up. I was telling the story of when I picked up my previously owned LT4 vert near Atlanta a few years ago. While headed North on the Interstate toward Bowling Green I got her up to 120 in a 70 zone but backed off as I did not want to get a ticket. Another Corvette owner said that if I had been caught the Kentucky LEOs could have taken the car.

It varies state to state.
It goes against the original intent of the constitution, but so does Kelo vs. New London.

I'd say yes, they can, and probably will.

Yes, the Police can impound your vehicle for wreckless driving and endangerment.

my understanding, if you are caught on an indian reservation going over 100mph, they confiscate your car, and they will keep it. not sure, it just may be an urban legend - ???

Where do you think the cars they give away at the casinos come from?

In Texas, they just haul you out to the nearest large oak and throw a rope over a sturdy branch......

NC is a "Privilege to drive state" meaning they believe it is a privilege to drive "Right to drive" states are so much better.
NC law says anything over 100mph is automatic impound of your car and you loose your license's for life. You can get your car back after a huge amount of fines.

Street racing on the other hand is worse then murder! If you are caught street racing at or over 100mph your car is seized and sold at auction, You loose you drivers license for life and 4 years jail time. 1st offense you get 1 year jail sentience and 2 years probation.
If anyone is caught just watching the race they seized their car to sell at auction and thay loose their license for life.

The NC governor's son was killed by street racing so now it is worse then murder. I once was in court (70 in a 55) and watched a 17yr old boy go to jail for 2 years for street racing . The next person was charged with 14 grams of heroin with intent to sell and got a 2 year supended sentience to 6 months supervised probation So to NC street racing is worse then selling heroin. I hate this place.

There is one or more videos on youtube, whre people in mustangs get stopped at like about 150, and maybe even in a construction zone.
They did not take his car, but I don't know where it took place.

Yup. Over a certain speed the driver can go to jail and the car goes to the impound lot.

Then 4 large cops tie your car up, lift it off the ground about 10 feet in the air, and drop it on you. They then call in 2 Tex-Mex gardeners with shovles and they bury you and the car on the spot. Or so I have heard

Yep they sure can about anywhere ! It was so bad in Houston they were hauling in cars with nitrous bottles in them saying the owners needed a permit to transport the stuff.

I don't do spirited runs anymore ! I like my ride too much !
Take it to the track and have some fun !

I was speeding when a NY trooper came up behind me with his lites flashing
I started to speed up and he continued to follow me, after about 20 miles I decided to stop. The Trooper came up and said to me that he was just coming off his duty
and if I gave him a GREAT REASON WHY I CONTINUED TO SPEED UP HE WOULD CONSIDER
LETTING ME GO!!!
after a few minutes I said my wife left me 5 years ago with a NT State Trooper
and I though he was bring her back!!!!!

HE SAID HAVE A NICE DAY!!!

A few months ago we had a very large "stop racing" police seizure auction here. 1000+ cars/trucks collected from around the state over 5 long years. I took $6500 and a big smile with me. I was hoping to buy a C5 honestly, But ended up with crap. 70% of the cars where either trucks/SUV's or 4 door car. 10% where 80's imports, 10% where totaled, 8% where hillbilly sports cars (80's V6 camaros & 4cyl mustangs ) and 2% where worth owning.

Out of all 1000+ advertised auto's I only seen two that I wanted to bid on. A 2000 M3 and a 91 twin turbo 300zx. Both where completely ragged out and basically ****. The M3 sold for $11K and the 300zx sold for $9K. I don't know if people where caught up in a bidding war or what but people where paying HIGH retail for highly abused cars.... Guess thats just a public auction for ya..

BTW Nitrous (not nosssss) is illegal to have installed here. If you are caught with an attached bottle they impound your car until a licensed mechanic comes to remove it. Takes weeks and you pay for it. $100 day storage fee, + the state funded mechanic fee. I had a friend that kept his empty bottle hooked up after a night at Rockingham dragway and it cost him over $1000 just to get his car back and no telling what the fines and court cost was. Oh and for some strange reason they took his fuel tank off, drained it and tossed it in the hatch (99 Z/28) His car smelled of gas for days afterward.

NC was the birth place of Nascar and all kinds of other racing that made this state. If not for racing and tobacco this state would be nothing. Now both are baned.
