Your computer is kicking into default. I bet when the fans come on your car smooths out and runs good. The computer is pickingup something faulty with a sensor and when it goes into default operation the fans come on as part of that operation. I had this happen to my 94 and it was the right side o2 sensor had went bad.

What year car do you have?

ok.. i did the paper clip diag.. and I got C12 on 1. which means no trouble there.
Then I got H64 0n 4. I looked it up and it's a historical Right O2 - Lean exhaust.
could this cause my fan to come on like that ?

thanks ChrisLT1conv sounds like you might have hit right on the head..

Yes this is exactly what mine did friday. same code; same symptoms. the car ran a little rough then the fans would come on full blast and the car would smooth up. I relpaced mine and it runs perfect now. I took the battery cable off after replacement to reset the computer too. I'm glad you found the grimlin under your hood. Save yourself some trouble and buy an O2 socket at autozone. they cost like 10 bucks and they are worth every penny.
