Default 1984 dashboard lights sensor:

I have a 1984 corvette and have a question about my dashboard lights. They all work, but they are not as bright as they should be. I know their is a sensor that controls the display lighting but mine seems to be working the opposite.
When its getting dark the light seems to dim more and when you cover the sensor up with your finger the lights fade real dim.
I took a small flashlight and put it over the sensor and WOW, the whole dash lit up like it was brand new.
Is this correct?

Is there anything I can do to get better lighting for the dash?
Any help would be great.
Thxs

Yes. That is how is works.

When it's dark out, turn on the parking lights and the dash will get brighter and you can adjust the intensity with the dimmer switch.

When it's light out the dash will get brighter. I know it sounds opposite of the way it should work, but that's how mine works too.

The sensor is just to the left and above the speedometer display.

It's a very small opening.

Think about it really. You will need the brightest display when its brightest outside, when the dash would be hardest to see. The dash doesnt need to be bright when its dark because you can see it well with low illumination.

This is without the trim over it, but it's behind the plastic window above the speedometer in this pic.

I understand how it works and all but I think that the dash could be brighter at night. I know I am getting old but it seems somewhat dim at night.

I am considering a bypass on that sensor. I saw a writeup about that somewhere.
