Is my engine running too hot?

Is my engine running too hot?
Normally, the gauge is steady around 190º and inches up to 230º or so if I'm stuck in traffic for several miles. Am I going to be in trouble when Chicago winter turns to Chicago summer?

I believe that stock the cars came with a 195 degree thermostat, so you should be right on. The fans don't even kick on until 235 or so, and even in cool weather my 87 used to run almost that hot. Change your thermostat and put in a fan switch so you can turn on your fans much earlier, and you might feel better :). But I wouldn't say you have a problem.

My first fan comes on at 227 and if needed the second at 235. I agree with VetteBabe1 install a fan switch. I turn my on around 215 and it makes me feel better. On open roads my car runs between 200-204.

That is perfectly normal. The stock thermostat is 190 and the fans turn on at 230* and off at 210*. Below 30mph or so mine runs over 190*, but faster than 30 is runs right at 190*, even in summer when it is hot. A tip to help your car stay cool is to remove the upper radiator cover and clean out all the leaves, small mammals, sticks, etc that collect between the radiator and the AC condenser. If you do a search or look in the tech tips, you should be able to find plenty of info about that procedure. Good Luck.

I have a 93 with the HPP thermomaster chip and a 160 thermo.
My car never goes over half the guage in traffic. My 87 without the chip and a 180 thermo went 225 in minutes.
What a difference no more watching the guage. Theres no getting around the traffic but you can beat the heat. In my Z-28 I installed a manual switch and went the road stopped I hit the switch, never got over 200.
If you're running hot in the winter it will only get worse.
190 moving, 235 stting is average. 250 is really hot.
Corvettes are built to run hot to kick off the converter (cat).

as long as youre running Mobil 1 oil, youre fine with those temps
get a 160 tstat, a fan switch or a custom chip (not hypertech) to reset your fan temps, and clean the front of your radiator

ronshafer-
You should have no problems since we are both in the same boat. I
sometimes turn-on the heat full blast just to make certain we don't overheat. Running with the heat on is normally not a problem since the top is down. The other 99% of the time you should have no problems.

When the A/C is on one fan is running all the time, like during the summer. Makes a huge difference for the hot times! Yours sounds very normal.

230 is too Hot !!!!:cry It takes the life out of your engine. My 88 use to go that high until we installed a fan switch and lower stat. It makes all the difference in the world. I can drive down the highway for a hour and it never gets over 202 in the summer heat. I can then park the car running and the temp stays

I bought my 95 Vette two years ago from Woodfield Chevy. I thought mine was running too hot also. The Mechanic said when I am in traffic Just turn on the A/C and it will cool down. I have learned to turn the air on before I get to bumper to bumper traffic. He also said when you turn on the air, fans kick in. I am thinking about adding the manual fan switch though. :flag :chevy

I dont know about running 30% coolant 70% water does not sound health to me, read the package and look at its protection rating, I run 65-70% anti-freeze/coolant for the best range of protection in all my stuff including the M/C, and it runs HOT 110 octane aviation fuel with octane boost does that! but what power.

I have a 94 and was a little paranoid myself.. It gets hot in Utah and was a little worried. Bought a Chiltons manual to find the relays to make sure they were working. And of course they were..hehe. My primary fan kicks on at 227 degrees and off at 217. AC one stays on. Normal temp for me on freeway doing 75 is 200-205.
