Default why no C4's

First, my name is Jeff & am the proud owner of a red, 1986 coupe.Being in my mid 40's, I have been a car guy most of my life. I really like the Pro-Touring cars but am wondering about this, why no C4 vettes are concidered Pro-Touring? Many parts from our cars are used in alot of different facets of the car hobby including the Pro-Touring cars. They can't be too new as many 80's cars are used to build these machines. So what gives? The early Vette owners get to play so why don't we? Chime in folks or if your car fits in, lets see some pics

Without knowing much about Pro Touring cars it might be the amount of electronics in the car at least my 91. Generally the older the car the less electronics. Mine has SIR(air bag), FX3 ride control,VATS(anti theft), ABS, engine ECU,climate control and CCM which is the central processor that talks to all the other computers passes information to them and the instrument cluster and runs a bunch of electricals it even changes the volume on a Bose radio according to speed and knows the state of most switches on doors hatch etc. i think the majority of this would have to come out and all replaced basically making the car not legal for highway use in a lot of states.

what sort of mods would you expect for a C4 to be defined as pro-touring? When I think pro-touring I think big wheels, the most up-to-date tires, big-brakes, updated suspension, & performance mods. Usually the mods consist of updating to EFI but C4s have this, so I think just power-adders/cam/headwork/stroker builds would fit the bill.

Re: wheels, most pro-touring cars are older and have updated alloys that fill out the wheel wells but C4s are filled out already, upgrading to ZR1 wheel width is about all you can do. You can get larger diameter wheels but the upgrade will be "+1" or whatever meaning the overall diameter stays ~ the same.

There are tons of C4s on this board with this stuff, so I'm not sure what you're referring to.

They ARE pro touring cars, only better

Most imo take an older car, do some suspension work, brake upgrades, larger rims/rubber, OD trans ie newer tech in them and call them pro touring. Basically older cars mimicing newer ones

The C4 already does all this with power accesories and good mpg to boot.

I'm not sure what pro-touring is, but if it is like pro-street, I think that fad is dead.

at any rate, it doesn't sound smog legal...what are we talking about, cars with carburetors?

From what Ive gathered over the years its an effort to make older cars handle stop accelerate better and be more comfortable as a newer car (even a C4) would be.

From the Team Camaro forum:

"
You'll never get a consensus on the true definition of pro-touring. Myself, I like to see a modern engine/trans combo with EFI, bigger modern wheels/tires, 4 wheel disc brakes, killer suspension, upgraded modern steering, upgraded modern interior, nice body/paint. Too many people slap 17" wheels on an early Camaro and call it pro-touring which is a joke. Other people probably won't think EFI is needed, but to me I would only call a car pro-touring if it has all of the above. "

That definition would make any stock C4 a Pro Touring car.

That was generally the point I was trying to make on the subject. Many C4 cars are 20 plus years old and alot of you are doing the LS swaps, suspension changes, wheels and so on. I feel that these cars are being wrongfully excluded. As far as the electronic content of our cars is concerned many 1980's GM G-body and 3rd gen F-Body cars are built in this manner so I don't think that is the issue. Whit the products available to us and the ingenuity of many C4 owners IMHO the C4's do fit in to the pro-touring class. Would love to build my ride in this manner, which is why I put this out there to gain the input of fellow C4 owners. As far as I am concerned, I would accept that black C4 as pro-touring. VERY SWEET RIDE

that topless 4 door C4 should be Pro Touring since it is now a touring car instead of a roadster

I suppose it's just sort of puzzling to me that when you visit Pro-Touring sites or browse through many magazines, the cut off point for a Vette to be considered "officially labeled" Pro-Touring is the C3 cars. True, our cars do many of the things one of these Pro-Touring cars do, right from GM, but the same upgrades are available to us that make our cars on the same, or maybe even a much higher level than those cars.

I guess its close.... LS2, dana 44, C5 brakes, VBP suspension. Im retaining all interior and going to upgrade that so yeah Ill be closer. Next season should be running the supercharger. Im trying to decide on a ESC system, Magnacharger, or Kenne Bell.

When I think of Pro-Touring, these come to mind.
They do have the "Pro" part built into the cost of these things.
