At that point I was running Headman Elite headers with Magnaflow 2.5' stainless cat and cat back. I did love the sound. I had to get rid of it because my new heads require bigger exhaust.

Youre looking for almost 100hp youll need Nitrous a blower or a head/cam/intake package to get there. Save about 5k min then go to town. You can get 350 (realistic)-400rwhp with a LTR setup but youll be spending quite a bit to get there. THen upgrade the trans then, then, then...$$
I've always said that you'd better figure each one horsepower you gain will cost you an average of $50. You want 100 more HP?... that will be $5000, please.
Forget the easy stuff, too....mufflers, airfoils, cold air intakes don't go by the $50/hp rule, they are worth next to nothing in the way of hp increases. Heads/cam is step one.
Actually, on an engine that old, a complete rebuild should be step one, using premium parts. There goes your $5000 and you're just back to stock hp levels!! Real power costs real money. Good luck and have fun.

A quick easy 330 to 350 HP can be had with
cheap set of vortec heads mild cam, vortec base,LTR, injectors and a tune. But like Crusineart said once you start making 350hp be prepared to spend money on other things.

Well selling the car and just buying a fast car really doesn't compare to building it yourself and anyone can just buy a fast car, if your building something yourself it makes it that much more special and spanking newer cars with something that you built yourself, that just doesn't compare to buying a fast car besides the fact that not too many people have money to just throw down.
I'll be doing most of the mechanical work myself except for the welding if needed in any aspect. And yea I kno I'll be needing to spend more then my budget but everything will work out hopefully just saving here and there should be enough, I have no rush just excited to rip it up

been there done that...I'd start with a different model year (like a C5) or commit to going bigger than a 350.
The reason I mention a C5 is that you can get into one for the dough you'll need to build a 383 or 396.

So glad i found this thread, I'm looking for the same answers! i too have an 89, bone stock, looking at where to start. I'm going to take rocco's advise and start with rebuilding the block so I have a solid base.

If you are going to keep it and your wallet allows ...
Stroke it , Forged crank , rods and pistons
and you won't look back and will be safe if sometime
down the road wants to use some power adder

You want to keep up with late models build bigger ci if you can youll need it. Now there are a few guys here that go fast with mild setups keep an eye out. PeteK, BeachBum few others come to mind. Simple motors that are well thought out and matched all the way back to converter, gear etc etc. They have been at it a along time and wont steer you wrong.

He's asking how to make more power out of the car he has now. Some of these responses...
OP, where'd you get Corsa mufflers at? Reason being, I didn't want to invest the $$$ into the entire corsa catback, but i can't seem to find the correct corsa mufflers anywhere?
ideally I'd like to buy the mufflers and take them to an exhaust shop.

Ok, so not to totally hi-jack this thread and steer it off course, but would it be more cost effective ($/hp) to do a 6.0L swap? i have access to a couple 6.0L truck engines already and they come stock 325hp. From what I hear it's not a big jump to 400hp with L92 heads and a cam? Been awhile since i researched it, theres more involved, i know.

Another easy/cheap swap would be low mileage vortec truck engine and a cam.
