Default Want to make my vette faster, just not sure were to start? Some help Plz

Hey everyone, I have a 1989 corvette l98 bone stock when it comes down to the drivetrain. The only mod is some corsa mufflers, and I'm actually looking to get louder so I might do a muff delete and a resonator delete? I want to make my vette fast but not willing to sacrifice AC and stuff like that because my vette isn't a garage queen, I give myself any excuse to take it out and toy with some of the ricers we have out here in NYC. So I would appreciate if any of you guys could help me out without doing a full rebuild

How fast you want to go? How much $ do you have to get there?

Most important thing is to set the above parms and then come up with a plan. It is important to come up with a plan otherwise you will just end up throwing parts into it and not acheiving your objective and end up wasting $ and effort.

Generally speaking, and engine is a pump, the more air and fuel in and out the more power. Until you hit the next weakest part of the system. Once you set the above parms, look at intake, heads, cam and exhaust. Even if you have to save up and execute your plan over a long time, the results in the end will be better and cheaper.

For about $350.00, you can replace your Y-pipe on the L-98. The power and sound increase is noticeable. What you are doing is getting rid of the two pre-cats. This is legal in everywhere except the People's Republic of California. I have a mechanic who did the install for $50.00 and he kept the three cats to sell. A stainless steel pipe directly thru the main cat can also help, but I would never recommend that. (wink-wink). You will feel the response immediately and the sound improves.

Well to start out right now I have about $1000 to play with, and as far as how much faster I want to go, well I want to be in the 350+ hp range As far as the rest of the car I already have upgraded brakes and tires and as soon as I have enough power I will be doing the suspension. The y-pipe mod sounds good and I will be looking more into that, so is there anything else? Like that hypertech chip Iv seen all over ? And how about those miniram intakes I see forsale all over?
Once again thanks all you guys, I'm defently going to put alot more thaught into it, thanks to you guys
Please keep in mind I still want my vette to be reliable on all this process.

Forget the chip.....snake oil . with corvetteronw....read Vader's site...several times.

As indicated above, how much do you want to spend. Improve intake and exhaust is a good start. If you don't want to do heads or can't, then go for roller rockers. It might also be time to change out the injectors.

You will get the most performance with heads and cam.

From vaders sight I think I'm going to start with the full exhaust then the k&n cut out. How much would I be looking at if I took it to a local shop to do the exhaust setup, taking out the precats and everything?

Establish your HP goals and limits. You already have a fantasy now you need the materials.

1. Cash

2. Credit Card

3. Paypal

4. Summit Racing

5. Other Vendors

6. Mailing Address

7. Garage

8. Tools

9. Digital Camera

10. Wife or Girl Friend

For all questions about the L98 there are tons of posts.

This is the trick:

Good luck, have fun and drive it.

I went with some muffler eliminators on the 87 I used to have. Took them off and sold them after 6 months or so. They were nice at idle and at low RPMs but were just too socially nasty when the RPMs got up there. My wife refused to ride in the car.
I was able to find a catless Y and a Magnaflow high flow cat along with a new rear Y and Magnaflow mufflers. It still sounded good but was much easier to live with.
I now have another L98 and am going with the same setup.
Check out www.corvettecentral.com for their exhaust systems. Oh yeah, purchase a new O2 sensor and have the muffler shop install it while they have it up on the rack, Those things always fail when the car starts to get a few miles on it.
Another thought. With the Obama administration making more noises about greenhouse gasses I don't think this is the time to run without a catalytic converter. You could end up getting fined or having to take the car off the road if the smog ***** bust your arze.

Dont waste money on mufflers and catback , they dont make your car faster .

Do the basic boltons , cam , heads , Nitrous shot (if you really want go fast).

and tires.

Do you think you could get a fair amount of money for your '89 if you sold it? The reason I ask is since you are looking for 350+ hp it might be cheaper to just sell yours and find a ZR-1 or a Callaway. Just my two cents.

Awful advise..
There are plenty of people making that kind of power and it's not hard.

Youre looking for almost 100hp youll need Nitrous a blower or a head/cam/intake package to get there. Save about 5k min then go to town. You can get 350 (realistic)-400rwhp with a LTR setup but youll be spending quite a bit to get there. THen upgrade the trans then, then, then...$$

Are you going to do the work ?
It makes a lot of difference if you are or if you are taking it to the shop
Not sure if you are mechanicaly inclined but its VERY important
that you know what are you doing and why,if not you can lose a lot of money
if you hang with the wrong mechanics.

I strongly suggest you to buy John Lingenfelter's on Modifying SB Chevy Engines
and the Factory service manual ! You'll love it !
