Default Best way to siphon gas?

think i got some bad gas, well gas gone bad from sitting too long. whats the best way to siphon the gas out of my '86? never siphoned before.

First thing is to buy a siphon pump. Sucking gas sucks. Better still, your fuel filter should be changed, when you remove it gas will flow out. Just be ready with containers.

How long has the gas been sitting? Gas generally takes a year or more before it's starts become stale, but even then it will still be fine to run in the car.

gas has been sitting(full tank) for maybe 3yrs(ouch) with fuel stabilizer. the car wont start just cranks so i wanted to drain the tank. figure i'd siphon out as much as i can and add some fresh fuel.

so best way is prob 6ft or so of hose?

Remove the fuel filter. Attach a piece of fuel hose to the fuel line. Place end of fuel hose in a gas can. Turn on the key. Replace filter with a new one when tank is empty.

I agree, sucking gas sucks! I like the using the fuel pump to start the siphon. You can't drain the tank with the electric pump because the pump only cycles for a few seconds when you turn the key to the "on" position. I have an old mechanical pump I use to start a siphon. I put the hose in the tank and hook up the other end to my fuel pump. Place the pump on the ground with the arm facing up. Then step on the arm a couple times to start the siphon. It works great!

Yeah...gas probably isn't in the best of shape at this point, but it should start. While it's probably a good idea to drain the tank I'm not so sure that's going to get the car to start, your injectors are probably in bad shape having sat for 3 years.

That's true. I should have been more specific. GM usually provides a "fuel pump test connector." When you jump 12v to the connector the pump runs continously. On the 1986, my Factory Shop Manual says the connector is terminal "G" of the ALCL connector (OBD I) under the dash. You would not have to turn on the key. You could alternately energize terminal "D" at the fuel pump relay. I haven't done this on my Vette, but I've used the test connection several times on other GM products. Good Luck!

Ah, c'mon. It's the challenge of the thing to get the hose out of your mouth in the split second before the gas gets to the end. Use clear vinyl hose and you have a fighting chance.

And keep a bottle of mouthwash handy.

I think you have a problem other than the old gas. it
should still start and run (maybe poorly).

Siphoning? Thirty years ago I bought an electric fuel pump,
and put a long cord with clips on it. It's been handy
on a number of occasions, most recently to empty the
as out of my boat tank so I could replace the tank
(E10 was eating up the old tank, thank you Archers
Daniels Midland and the congress you bought off).

well i siphoned out three quarters of the tank yesterday. i got a jerry can with about 7 bucks of fresh fuel. i did pick up a longer hose as well.

should i siphon out the last quarter tank of fuel or just add the fresh fuel in now?

also i know before i had starting issues because my battery tender was not providing enough power, i guess it crapped out since i leave it hooked up everyday. i picked up a new one to see if that makes a difference also.

Correct.

You can disconnect the fuel line at the filter, have a few big fuel cans ready, and run a piece of line into the can. Now run 12V to terminal G on the ALDL.....your tank will evacuate very quickly. Be ready. Also be ready to yank the wire out when the tank gets close to being empty or you will burn up your fuel pump......they don't like to run dry.

Quick, easy, and safe.

sounds like a good way to do it. i already emptied out almost the whole tank though with a siphon.

i have a quarter tank left maybe a bit less. you think i should get that last bit out or just add some fresh gas in?

Get out as much as you can, but don't let the pump run dry. The second it starts sucking air, cut the power to it.

i probably wont siphon out the last bit that way. i mean in general with a hose in the tank should i siphon the last bit out or just put in the fresh gas and give it a try.

You won't be able to get it all out anyway. Get it down as far as is practical, and then fill the tank with fresh fuel.

Even after three years of sitting, it still should have banged a couple of times. Did you check fuel pressure? Modern gasoline doesn't deteriorate nearly as quickly as some people think.
