Default Power Antenna Mast/Ribbon Failed Install

Power antenna would not raise or lower but there was power to the motor. Purchased mast and ribbon repair kit. Removed old mast and broken plastic tooth ribbon.
Installed new mast/ribbon motor accepted ribbon but still won't raise or retract but only slightly. Will not fully extend or retract??

I'm lost?? : toetap:

Mast repairs generally don't work on the later
C4's. The problem generally is the broken remainder ribbon that stays in the assembly, jamming things up. Earlier ones had screws that you could remove to open up the housing at remove the old pieces. Later ones use plastic rivets. It's generally better to do what ch@0s says and bite the $100 (internet) bullet.

Could always go with the manual one that was batted around here a couple days ago.

If you don't want to spend the 100 bucks, you can always try this option

I understand you can drill out the plastic rivets and pry the cover off, then reseal it with epoxy. No need to buy anything except some relatively cheap epoxy.

I figured it was the remainder if the ribbon that's still jammed in the motor assembly. Seemed like a good fix until I tested it. So be it. It goes up enough to get reception. It retracts enough to not easily break off.

You mentioned that had a broken ribbon. This means the other half stayed inside the antenna motor. It's like a broken bolt, how would you be able to screw a new one in if the old half still inside the thread.

One would think. However when I removed the old mast inserted the new plastic ribbon turned radio off the ribbon did retract into the assembly. When I next step installed the mast in only retracted and raised about 3-4 inches. Weird.

I had a similar problem. Drilled out the plastic rivets, cleaned all the pieces out, lubed it all up, put in a new mast and ribbon. It went up and down properly about 4 times and now sits about 3 inches out. Must have jammed and stripped somehow. I'll have to try again.

That's the rare Z00 option. Only 0.5% of C4s came with it.

A potato jammed on the stub also works. When it dries out just replace it.

When the power antenna ribbon broke on my '96, I tried the easy fix, but no-go; mast would not come out.
So removed power antenna assembly, drilled-out plastic rivets and found the ribbon had broken at the very end, jamming the gear drive.

Still have it sitting on a shelf as I end-up getting a new assembly.

Could not believe what all had to be done to get the old assembly out and new assembly in. Lesson learned here was not to follow the manual exactly. Easier to remove left tail light and go in that way instead of from below and removing inner wheel liner.
