That's an awesome job that you did. I'd be interested in buying one of these in the future.

On my 86 there was no wiring in/behind the header trim. I ran a three conductor wire down to the courtesy light timer. The map lights are switchable when the doors are closed and it operates with the courtesy lights when the doors are unlocked and opened. I believe that the mirror that I used was from a 90's GM car (maybe a 3rd gen?).

I replaced my Sun Visors last year with a set that had Homelink Buttons built in. Both visors has lighted vanitys and were wrapped in black cloth like the originals. Bought them on Ebay brand new. It is an excellent mod for those looking to add Homelink to their Vette.

I am very interested in getting a new rear view. This mod is on my wishlist! I would love, love to have the ambient light feature. I miss that so much when driving the Vette at night. My other cars have it.

I'm in when you have the mount.

My '86 has wiring in the windshield header. There is a 3 pin connector just to the left of the rear view mirror mount. I think it was supposed to be for a vanity mirror in the driver's sun visor.

I don't think the map light rear view mirror was an option in '86. I have one I got from somebody on eBay. It was supposedly from a S10 pickup. He claimed "they're all the same". He lied. I had to do major mods to the mount to get it to fit -- a LOT of filing and I had to drill and countersink a hole for the mounting screw. As I recall, it was designed to slip over a mount glued to the windshield.

I've done a LOT of searching, and not found any other vehicle that uses a mount compatible with the C4 mirror mount. The seller probably had no clue that not all cars use the slide-on button glued to the windshield.

So are you going to be selling the whole thing? Or just the wire harness? What is the mirror called (from what car/company)?

Looks awesome! I too have been wanting to do this but couldnt find a mirror that fit our cars!!!

I didn't want to take any sales away from the original poster, so I never mentioned that my map light mirror is NOT made by GM. There is a company that makes rear view mirrors and they have a zillion options. Some are pretty exotic...

Great job, also did that on car back in 2003, and love the dimming is which I wanted, cause with the top down everybody blinds me when driving at night. Only wish it had home link.
Enjoy

Hi Cliff,

How well does your modded mount fasten to the header? Got a pic I can see of the mount itself? Does it have any wiggle? The screw in my factory mirror loosens with time. Made me think a heavier mirror with no alignment pin would just make things worse. But I do have a nice mirror I'd eventually like to put in the car.

Regards,

Here's the mirror mount. I did major filing on the base to get it to fit. It has a pin that goes into a hole in the header, so I had to work around that and drill the mounting hole accordingly. I soldered the wires to the wiring in the header because I couldn't find an appropriate connector. The only problem I've seen with this guy is that I moved the mirror about a million times while I was working on it and it got a little loose. It tends to droop if I hit a hard bump.

Just buy the home link visor like I did. Then you would have the best of both worlds. I cant wait for Andrew to have the mount adaptor sold!!!

BTW love the Maltese!
