That is the biggest reason. Cali has very strict smog laws and cars sold in CA have more smog stuff crammed in them

Oh and if you buy one outside of CA and try to register it in CA you have to ensure it meets the smog standards!

ALL cars built in the U.S. are built to the same smog standards. Now,one thing Im not too sure about is Ca cars were governed to a lower top speed. The reason I think this might be true is years ago I had an 84 and a close friend had an 84.My car was from Ca would only top out at 123 M.P.H. while my friends car from out of state would go well over 150 M.P.H.I read somewhere this was tru of Ca cars but its been years.

If you have no smog law, you could remove the Cats and put some nice mufflers on there. With some new headers and bigger exhaust pipes. As stated by Z51 all cars are built the same, but most aren't left that way and in Cali that is where the issue come in. All I did to my old car was replace the Cats with High Flows and change the mufflers and the car failed the smog!

i've never heard of a governer on an 84. the top speed was quoted as 139mph by car magazines and 142mph by Chevrolet. i'm not sure if there are any differences in the emissions equipment on a non CA car as opposed to a CA car that would affect top speed.

Really? It's called the intake manifold.

Not sure of 84s but certainly by the 90s there was no more emissions equipment on Ca cars than any others.

One thing you can be certain on is there probably is a difference in the EGR calibration. I've also never heard of a govenor on Ca cars.

I've owned non-Ca cars in Ca. and never had a problem with emissions testing. Ca. doesn't make anyone add emissions controls or change any for calibration differences however, they do have to pass the "sniff" test up the tailpipe and I haven't had any problems in that area. The standards in Ca. for emissions are well above what the manufacturer had to build to. As long as all the equipment is in place the car will pass the visual. The only individual components that are tested is the EGR and the EVAP system. The tech will definately look underneath for cats with a mirror but he sure can't inspect the inside. The risk of removing cats is high hydrocarbon and Nitrous Oxides but most cars will pass the standard without cats but may measure on the high side. One misfiring plug will definately cause a failure for high hydrocarbon.

Never heard that one! After 28 years, it would have been common knowledge, and in all parts catalogues...if true....

I checked Wiki, FWIW,

"The 305 was used in the following cars:

1976–1992 Chevrolet Camaro
1977–1993 Chevrolet Caprice (includes Impala)
1980 Chevrolet Corvette (California only)
1976–1988 Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet El Camino, and Chevrolet Monte Carlo
1976–1979 Chevrolet Monza
1976–1979 Chevrolet Nova (also GM X-body clones after 1976)
1977–2003 Chevrolet/GMC Trucks, SUVs, Vans
1978–1987 Buick Regal
1975–1979 Buick Skylark
1991–1992 Cadillac Brougham
1977–1981 Checker Marathon
1991–1992 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser
1978–1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass (US Market only, Canadian market 1978–1987)
1978–1992 Pontiac Firebird
1981–1987 Pontiac Grand Prix
1977–1986 Pontiac Parisienne
The Chevrolet 305 is often referred to as a "Boat Anchor", due to its lack of power and use in multiple marine aplications. After 1996, its usage was limited to light trucks and SUVs until the 2000 model year (vans and commercial vehicles until 2003) as the Vortec 5000. The 305 is currently still in production as a marine powerplant for Mercury Marine.

Year hp (kW) lb•ft (N•m)
1976 140 250 w/2bbl.
1977 145 245 w/2bbl.
1978 140 240 w/2bbl.
1978 160 235 w/4bbl.
1979 130 245 w/2bbl.
1979† 125 235 w/2bbl.
1980 155 240 w/4bbl.
1981 150 240 w/4bbl"

305 or 307?

As far as I know, the only engines available in Novas in 1972 state-wide were the 250 straight-six, the 307 2bbl V8, the 350 2bbl V8 and the 350 4bbl V8 (K code) in the SS.

The 305 didn't make it into the Nova until 1976.
