Default Serpentine belt

Hey guys I got a quick question. I just replaced my water pump on my 1996 lt4. I'm having a issue trying to get tension back on the belt. I had removed the tensioner pulley to remove the belt now I can't get the belt on, there's too much slack. Any ideas? Thanx

These belts are typically tough to install (not enough slack) is this your problem?

there is a 1/2 square hole in the pulley. Use your 1/2 socket wrench or breaker bar to pull against the tension so the belt will go back on

First of all, on the LT4s, you relieve the tension by putting a 16mm wrench on the tensioner pulley & turn it clockwise - being careful not to shear off the sensor on the front of the water pump.

Make sure you got the correct size belt. IIRC, it should be around 66-67 inches long. GoodYear lists 2 sizes fore 1996, one of them being 80 inches or so - needless to say it doesn't fit.

Finally, make sure the belt is being routed around the pulleys properly, there is a diagram on the radiator shroud showing the proper routing.

This is what I am using on my LT4

Gates Micro-V AT® - Serpentine Belt
Part Number: K060670

UPC: 72053248265
13/16" x 67 1/2"
Section: K
Number of Ribs: 6
Top Width (in): .807
Top Width (mm): 20
Outside Circumference (in): 67.543
Outside Circumference (mm): 1716

As others have mentioned, make sure you have the belt routed correctly.

Diagram from the FSM for a '96 belt routing.

Thanx everyone for the responses. My problem is not getting the belt on, I have it on but it's very loose. When I took it off I didn't use the tensioner I just removed the tensioner pulley. Now that everything is back on, the belt is very loose

Did you tighten the tensioner bolt good enough? Is your belt old if so replace.

Then something isn't put back together right.
Is this the same belt you took off, and it fit fine before you started?
Or did you buy a new belt?

You don't have to take the tensioner off in order to remove/replace the belt.
You might not have it all back together correctly.

Yes it is the same belt I took off, I actually had it replaced about two months ago. I didn't realize I did not need to pull off the pulley. It's been a whole since I have worked on any of my cars, kinna rusty lol

On the back of the belt tensioner there is a knot, bump or male end that has to slide back into the female end of the block. While tightening up the bolt to the tensioner make sure the male and female end are getting it on.

Thank everyone I got the belt on, I guess I was just not seeing how to pull up the tensioner. I got another problem now, lol. I got everything together and running no leaks but I'm overheating. I think I may have mixed up the hoses. The passenger side hoses the skinny ones, one is marked engine top I have it on the bottom because it didn't seem like it fit the top. Is that my problem? Sorry for the stupid questions and thanx again
