Default Trivia Question: 1981 Corvettes

The trivia question at my Corvette club meeting tonight was: "Besides the VIN and door stickers, what were the only differences between '81 'vettes built at the St. Louis plant vs. those built at the Bowling Green plant?" Answer: "No two-tone painted cars were ever produced at the St. Louis Plant". REALLY? I read someplace a while ago that at least 100 two-tone painted cars were produced at the St. Louis plant before it was shut down. Anyone out there want to weigh in on this?

I always heard that same story, although you might get better answers over in the C3 section.

Back then, I remember reading, that no 2 tones were made in St. Louis. I cant prove it though. Maybe do a post in the resto forum on here.

From a paint perspective, the St. Louis cars were lacquer-based whereas the Bowling Green cars were basecoat-clearcoat. I believe it’s easier to do the two tone on a facility with basecoat-clearcoat capability.

I've read about 80 "Pilot" cars done in a new two-tone procedure in the '81MY production but there was no mention of the "plant". I would think that since the two-tones were available from BG MAYBE the "Pilots" were done in St Louis. There was a thread I saw a while ago that a previous St Louis employee posted regarding his personal knowledge of 20+ cars in St Louis BUT they were done in a closed Caprice assembly line shop. Who knows? The guy with the "brush"!!
