Freeze Plug

Freeze Plug
I have a 1989 Corvette, I have a coolant leak on the engine, about even with the back side of the right front wheel. Someone told me it was my freeze plug. Is this the what my problem is? If so how do you replace it or where in the Dallas area is there someone who can replace or repair? I can see what appears to be a leak using a flash light and a mirror. It is just under the exhaust manifold.

Yes it can be replaced but with the engine in the car is is not easy. Old plug, about 2 in in diameter must be removed then a new plug driven in. Not a big job with the engine on a stand but a real PITA with it in the car. This is a classic case of paying 2 bucks gor a part and $200 to get it put in.

Any reputable repair shop can replace the freeze plug. The starter has to be removed, and probably the exhaust manifold. There are special tools for removing freeze plugs and once out, it's a matter of cleaning the opening in the block and tapping in a new freeze plug.
It would be a PITA to do while laying on your back in the garage.

Irontite block sealer works for me.
