I was thinking about buying a C5 for a winter beater.

That's where my Toyota Tacoma steps in! I'm sure I could manage driving my vette in the snow, but it's the idiots around me that I don't.

I was thinking about buying a C5 for a winter beater.
Good one!

When I moved back to Utah a few years ago, I drove my 1990 Coupe year round. When the motor went, it went to the garage to be "Upgraded". I bought a 1990 Convertible and drove it as a year round car as well. Here in Utah we do get snow off and on, and as long as you drive it sensible, it really is not all that bad. Honestly it is better around here in the snow that my lowered Suburban (Bought in California already lowered). My Vette has more ground clearance, and does not have the extra weight to make it slide more on ice.

If you were to install thinner wheels and snow tires and remove the air dam for the winter it would be just as good as any rear wheel drive car in the snow, minus a couple of inches of ground clearance. If I absolutely had to drive it through the winter, that is what I would do.

I agree that those are great tires and use the same. I drive mine year-round too.

Mine was a DD for about 4 winters. I get snow here, but nothing like you folks up there. It's doable, put about 250lbs of sand over the rear wheels. Avoid uphill starts as much as possible. It is absolutely not fun to drive in the snow. Be very careful and light right footed. Oh, and if there is any patch greater than 4" in your path, you're done. The airdam will catch it and your rear tires will do nothing but spin.

My true suggestion would be to rent a car for the snow days until yours is done.

Drive the Z daily, but that's easy in Vegas.
Did get caught in the snow in Salt Lake City last year

It was no fun, waited for them to clear the streets, 315's just skate!

Oh, and it didn't melt...

Any snow we do get is usually gone within a week but I was forced to drive my C4 for one Winter. Couldn't find any snow tires...
Hardest part was getting out of the unplowed backlane. I just stayed on the main roads and it was fine. Kept testing the tire grip (gas & brake) to see when the tires would give and kept steady pace. Where possible, I gave as much oppertunity for others to pass me. Also prided myself to be the slowest driver out there but actually did pass a few people who just had no idea how to drive in the white stuff.

I wouldn't want to do that again but it can be done - just use your head!

I've been driving my '91 with ZF6 for several winters now with no issues except the occational freezing weatherstrip (doors get stuck), which takes just a little time (and force) to overcome. No block heater and starts even from beyond -30 C (-22 F) without problems, warms up quickly.

This winter I had to pass due to a broken ringland in one piston. The engine block is now in the machining shop waiting for all new rotating parts to get assembled.

Here is a short vid for local newspaper's website a couple of years ago... They were slightly surprised that somebody would drive all year round with this kind of a vehicle - in Finland.

Don't mind the language. It's just Finnish.

I used to drive my 85 Capri 5.0L 5spd with slicks in snow and ice storms all the time with no issues, so if need be I do not see myself having issues driving the C4 in inclement weather. Actually the only issue I would have is not being able to have fun with it

Looks like I may get my chance to try it out today if my vette gets done today! Driving in the snow is one thing, but frozen icy snow is another! Wish me luck!
