Default Fuel Gauge always full 86 vert

I have a 86 convertible and the fuel gauge always reads Full. I did a search and read a lot of the posts here but still don't have an idea of what's wrong. I also downloaded Willcox's instructions but they only go to 82.

I tested the wires coming from the sending unit. It does have a good ground and the volts read about 10.4 when the switch is turned on. When I checked the ohms it only reads 4.2 with the tank over half full I think the range on the ohms reading goes from 0 to 90 ohms.

Does anyone have a link or instructions on how to better test the sender/gauge on an 86. It is the one with the digital gauges. The fuel gauge is in the center and the bars always read full. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Take your fuel sender out and using an ohm meeter hook to both leads. The ohm value should slowly change as you move the float from one side to the other.

OK, sometimes I'm a bit slow on the uptake in my advancing age, so you'll have to bridge the gap for me....how is the price of fuel related to a working vs non-working fuel sending unit??? I don't get how leaving it broken will save you a penny.....

Well, I removed the fuel pump/sender unit and cleaned as in the link but it still reads full all the time. Also, now I can't get the car started. The battery died trying to start it. I'm guessing because the fuel system was empty. Do I need to do something special to prime the fuel pump after re installing? I am charging the battery overnight and will try again tomorrow.

Did you try to read the resistance while you had it out?

I did but it only changes at the far end of the travel. In other words, I think it will tell me when it is empty but nothing in between. After charging the battery, it started right up. Will be taking it back out and try again or will replace...
