Make hood release emergency cables now
If you have not done so you should make hood release emergency cables now. It took me about 1/2 hour and some plastic tubing and stainless steel wire I had around the house. I also had to drill 2 small holes.
I also cleaned old grease out of the hood latches and put some new grease in. It is much easier to pull the hood release handle under the dash now.
How one looks with the hood closed. It is very hard to see from outside the car with the hood down. Remember, they do not have to look perfect. If you need them, you should only have to open the hood once with them before fixing the hood release.
With the hood up.

This is something that should be posted from time to time for the new members and can be a life saver.

Oh yeah...And so easy. And if that doesn't work out, I'm building myself one of those steel rod hoodd latch tools like the one the guy used on mine to get it open. Believe me: NOTHING worse than that feeling in the pit of your stomach when your hood won't release!

There is much more secure way of opening your hood latch instead of having to install emergency cables that gives thieves potential access to your engine compartment Every C4 owner should have this tool in their vette as a necessity. Easy and secure

I've got some zip ties and steel wire, and need to do this. I've got a couple hours of time free tonight. Anyone got a good set of directions on exactly what needs to be done?

Plastic zip ties can become weak and brittle with age and repeated heat cycles. Could break when you pull on them.
I used stainless wire from my MIG welder. Regardless of what you use, better to have something in place just in case.
Side tip: if you do this mod it's also a great time to clean out the drain pockets where the hood pins are. My car carried a pool of water in each when I bought it. Years of muck clogging the drains.

I used 50# test fishing leader which is rust proof plastic coated wire with a snap on one end that clips on the release lever. Use an awl or pocket screwdriver to pierce a hole in the rubber gasket and push the swivel on the other end of the leader through the hole. You can get the leaders in 12 to 24 inch lengths. A couple of bucks gets a packet of them.
I agree that zip ties get brittle with age, especially in the cold weather and can break with very little force applied.
