1990 700R4 shifting problem
My 1990 Corvette automatic transmission stopped shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. Still runs fine in 1st and 2nd gear and in reverse but when starting out in drive it shifts OK through 1st and 2nd gear but when it shifts to 3rd it like it goes into neutral. Stops pulling. Gave no warning, no noise no slipping. Had driven about 150 miles with no problem. Stopped at a stop sign and when I pulled out it shifted normally through 1st and 2nd and into 3rd where it was just like shifting into neutral. It stopped pulling and the engine just revved up. Checked the fluid level. It was OK. Fluid was clean and red colored no smell of burned clutch of anything. Any idea what would cause this?

i wonder if a shift solenoid failed. i've never heard of an issue like yours. i'm sure someone with more experience with automatic transmissions could be of further help. have you tried to manually shift through the gears?

Yes I tried shifting manually. Same result. Shifts from 1st to 2nd OK then when you manually shift to Drive or Overdrive theirs nothing.

At minimum you need to adjust the TV cable. It controls the pressure that is applied to the various gear clutches. That MAY fix your problem, but...
It is very common on the 700r4 for the 3rd gear clutches to burn up, especially if the engine has been modified. It's usually caused by an incorrectly adjusted TV cable. You might need to replace your clutches if they are burned. That means a complete trans rebuild.

I know there hasn't been a post on this thread for a bit but thought I would answer the big question. My brothers and I did this to our Corvette. !990. We installed a 1969 DZ 302ci bored .030 with the 12.5 domes. Roller cam set up. Aluminum big valve heads. Dual Quads. Very very scary fast. So after my brother James topped the car out (172mph)and my brother Dan shifted out of second (700r4) at 72mph the servo for 3rd and 4th said see ya I'm out. They simply burned it up. The trans had to be rebuilt
