A/C Compressor Replacement
I have a high pitched noise that I attributed to the a/c compressor. When I turn on the a/c, the noise goes away. Has anyone replaced this before?
Is it an easy job?
Thanks in advance

It's NOT an easy job.
I'd be more inclined to blame the serpentine belt tensioner.
You could try removing the belt and running the engine. Don't run it for very long, as there is no water circulating with the water pump not working. That would eliminate all the accessories that are driven by the belt.

As mentioned, your description indicates the clutch pulley/rotor bearing is bad.
Slip the serpentine belt off of the compressor pulley and manually spin the pulley. If you hear the noise or the pulley bearing feels rough you can replace just the bearing.
If this is for a 84 with the R4 compressor, Autozone rents the tool to pull and replace the compressor clutch hub. If you have a hydraulic press replacing the bearing is easy.

Shop around for the best price. Here's an example

It can be done with a vice. Just be careful you don't damage/bend the pulley.
Read this thread. He replaced the bearing but damaged
the pulley/rotor. This was on a different compressor but
the procedure to replace the bearing is the same.
