Side view mirror repair...anyone been down this road?
Noticed this morning that my driver's side view mirror is cracked. How difficult of a task is it to replace the mirror portion only? Thanks.........

hi,go to a well stocked auto parts store and ask for replacement side mirror glass inserts.did mine because they were all scratched up.they are simple to install by reading the instructions that come with the kits.one tip is to buy a tube if clear silicone to give the mirrors a extra bite on the rear backing plate because the kit give you tape thats not that great.good luck,greg84

Crap. i forgot to check you post. The reason why they are better is that the glass is cut to a more percise sepecs than the onesm you'll find at the auto parts store.
I'll check with my supplier and see if they have them in stock.
When one of my dealers need a replacement mirror it had better be right or they get all kinds of pissed. These are the only ones we use. And I will never cut them myself again, time consuming and you never perfect on them . I'll make it a point to get back to you.

* * * UPDATE * * *
For what it's worth, I received the replacment mirror from the dealer yesterday and installed it. Took all of 10 minutes.....a really easy job. You just pull real hard on the old/broken mirror and it pops right out. It is held in place (to the motor) at three points (one in the middle, one on the bottom and on to the left). All you have to do is snip the two wires for the defroster and splice them into the new unit (the new unit comes with the connectors....you supply the wire crimping tool). Snapping on the new mirror must be done with a little caution, but just use the palm of your hand (as per instructions included) and it goes on pretty easy. :cheers:

Crap....
Glassman you didn't reply right away and I thought you had lost interest.... another case of my impatience screwing me!!!
In any event I purchased a mirror from Autozone for $25... it looks as though it's held on by adhesive, the fit is pretty good but not 100% exact (more like 95%). I haven't installed it yet cause I can't figure how to get the old one off. (I only looked at it for a few seconds). I'll try the install tonight.

I didn't know that these are heated. If they are get the ones from the dealer. It is a pain in the butt to get the heating element out .
If it is not a heated unit. First yank on the plastic backing until it comes out. Then break the crap out of the mirror and use a scraper to get the residue off. Then remount the backing to the mirror. Now put some silicone down and firmly pust the mirror on. Tape until it cures you're set.
