Ruined 2 batteries in my Vette and Harley last winter using Battery tenders. Dealerships told me it's common. Delco refunded 100% of new bat cost for Vette. It had 32 months left and I know a bat can toast anytime, but not 2 in one winter. They told me best thing is to trickle charge full and remove neg term for winter.

I know you can cook a battery with a trickle charger but I have never heard of anyone destroying a battery with a BatteryTender. The whole principle behind them is to protect the battery from that happening. You would have to have catastrophic failure for that to go down and you say you had two do this. Unheard of bad luck.
The tenders send out a pulse and check current drain. Depending on how much current was pulled they adjust the time between pulses. As the drain lowers they increase the time in between pulses until they are pulsing once or twice an hour for just milliseconds with no additional current fed to the battery. At this point nothing goes into the battery until a current drain is felt so the battery is held at full charge without any over charging or cooking. They are the safest way to maintain a charge I know of.
I use the Waterproof 800 series because of melted snow or rain on the garage floor and don't want to short anything out. I have used them for many years on my motorcycles and my vettes and have never had any problems nor do I know of anyone that has. You are the first and you had two destroyed batteries so I might have to question if you were using them incorrectly, but do not know how you could do that other then letting them on while you start the car. This could damage the units somehow but not sure about that either.
I have them on all year even in the summer so that I know my batteries are ready to go at all times and my batteries last many years. Before this my cycle batteries had to be replaced every two years but now I'm on my fifth year and show no signs of weakening. I have nothing but good things to say about these units and would recommend them to anyone.

Having been a wrench in a former life (and not always having an answer but always appearing to have an answer) I humbly suggest that whoever told you Battery Tenders commonly cause batteries to take a dump doesn't know much about batteries and/or Battery Tenders.

I use the quick disconnect bolt on connector/cable on my 96' and just feed the male connector/cable thru the gill on the side. That way you can close the hood. Pop the hood, quick pull, and you are on your way.

I have had three BatteryTender Jr.s hooked to motorcycle batteries for the last five years. Never had a problem.
On my C4, I hook up a B&D Smart charger to the battery every month and charge until the charger says "FULL" (usually 2 days) at 2 amps. Seems to work good for me.
I like the looks of that Optima, though.....
