Did you open the door with the key still in the ignition?
I would take the dash apart and see exactly where the sound is coming from.
The alarm system is armed by locking the doors.

my '85 doesn't make any noises, I know the alarm works because I have set it off a few times by mistake.
do you have an aftermarket stereo installed, I have one in another car that beeps at me every time I shut the car off, just a thought.

It could very well be the aftermarket stereo. The car itself has nothing that would "beep" behind the dash.. The car does have a "chime noise" for the headlights being left on or the keys left in the ignition.

A little story... I had a '71 Corvette and the tach stopped working. It is driven by a cable that comes off the distributor. I had always been afraid to take the distributor apart because I didn't know how it worked or what the parts inside looked like. I thought they might have to go back together some special way or it wouldn't work. I took it apart and found that it was in fact extremely simple. Then it occurred to me that it has to be simple so Bubbas everywhere can work on it.
