A friend loaned me the puller and installer. I'm swearing at the front seal that refuses to move at the moment!

The HB came out pretty easy. Didn't have to remove the rad fan, didn't have to jack up the engine, none of that. The upper power steering tube must be disconnected and moved, and it's real handy to pull the plenum and MAF, but other than that, no worries. Oh, and you don't have to put a screwdriver in the flywheel teeth, just put a block of wood under the clockwise side (about 3 o'clock) of the puller to keep the engine from turning.

At least the timing cover is ok. Now that would require swearing AND beer!

I used a piece of pipe (the right diameter) to press in the front seal by using a balancer install tool.

I'm a firm believer in ending the day on a good note....so I stopped after having installed the risers, plenum, and various tubes and bolts. All done except the throttle body. I swapped out the O2 sensor ( Thanks Antfarmer 0 Mine was 4 years old not new last year. I also changed my ICM, CTS, EGR valve, reinsulated my EGR tube, and cleaned and painted along the way. I also found my riser bolt that lived in the engine compartment for three days.

This project has fought with me all the way but it is why I will never get rid of it.

Here are a few pics.

Finished a month working on new carpet (didn't end up perfect, but it's a daily driver) and Kenwood amplifier for my new front speakers. Unfortunately I accidentally cut the surround on one of my rear speakers so I guess I'm moving up to 6x9 3 ways back there. Aw shucks.

Default Fixed the Cruise Control On My '86

I've had this car for about 2 years now and when I first got it it cruise control worked. I couldn't figure out why it stopped working until I pulled back the rubber boot on the control Servo for the cruise control. Turns out the ball chain that connects to the throttle cable had broken. I couldn't find a replacement and short of buying the whole unit used on eBay I spent the day going to my local automotive parts store and even home depot. Then someone mentioned a hardware store that specializes in stainless steel for the Marine industry and I found exactly what I needed!
Here was the broken ball chain that connects to the throttle cable:

I needed to create some more space to put a stop on the throttle cable where it connects to the ball chain, so I cut off about a half inch of the threaded rod that goes through the cruise control bracket:

Then I crimped a stop on the throttle cable and connected one end of the ball chain to that:

I then carefully measured the other end of the ball chain and cut it so that it went to the cruise control diaphragm without any slack, fed it through the new rubber boot, and connected it. Voila! Took it for a test drive and the cruise control now works perfectly!

My horn sounded only half-loud the last few times I used it. Working on the harmonic balancer over the weekend I discovered the right side horn wire had simply come disconnected from the horn. Go figure. I like easy fixes

ALERT!

Don't ever buy the straight intake plenum from Mid America to replace your accordion style. It will split along the bottom seam and you will be sucking in unfiltered air. And the instructions tell you to install it with the seam down, so you can't see it (unless you have to remove it to replace, for example, your harmonic balancer).

They sell it under the guise of less turbulence going into the TB/splitter. Yeah whatever. I was stupid to buy one way back then. Thank goodness I kept the original. Now if I could just find it...

Default Checking things

Pulled the battery, cleaned the post and connects, dielectric grease, clear coat of paint on the bottom of the battery box, re-assembled. Check voltage and ground on the MAF to make sure it was getting 12v and was grounding. Cleaned plug in and put back together. Test start car for about a minute or to. That's it. 90F in da Garage so chilling in the house. ;-)

Transferred the car to my name, just purchased it last weekend, and put plates on it. Oh, and ordered front shocks for it because the front right is blown. I wondered what the first repair would be......

Walked by it and put the horn switches I got in yesterday on the seat. Got a couple cheap horns this morning also. But , other chores and much sweat stopped work out there. May be tomorrow, horns again.

Driver side window motor replaced and re-assembled, over 3 lunches and a bit of evenings.

Alignment process...well, time for a test drive.

Default Radar detector

Hard wired my BEL 955 radar detector to the power circuit inside the rear view mirror. Mounted it on the upper w/sh pillar to the left of the mirror. Tucked away nicely and powers on when car is started.

finally installed the dewitt radiator and fan. already noticed how well it's keeping the car cool. during a horrible stop and go traffic, i never saw it go over 210 and it ACTUALLY works so well that it immediately dropped back down to 195ish. averaged 190-192 during 30 mins of stop and go traffic. originally, it would've shot up to 235s and wouldn't cool down! nice to enjoy the cool AC the whole way rather than the heater on full blast

OH! and I had two bulbs replaced in the dash so I can finally see the rpm's. It's one of those things you wouldn't think to miss until you don't have the luxury to have
