Metal on metal sound
Was on the expressway the other day and had to brake hard. Not a panic stop, but had to jump on it, when I heard what sounded like a metallic scraping sound.
Like everybody else, I first think brake pads. So I lightly hit the brakes, nothing, a little harder, nothing, progressively more and more, nothing. Until I jump on it again and I hear it.
I pull each wheel and inspect pads for wear. There's still meat on them, I'm going to need pads in the near future, but no indication of any metal to metal contact.
Maybe a wheel hub bearing?
I have an 89' coupe with standard brakes.

You need to pull all four wheels and perform a detailed inspection.
I'd pull the calipers off as well to ensure all pistons are functioning and rotors are solid

Check for play when grabbing each wheel at the 12:00-6:00 positions which would indicate possible hub wear. How much pad is remaining before the wear indicators contact the rotors?

Is your Vette lowered? The first time I lowered/slammed Betty Boop the tires would rub on the fenders/hood. I raised it using one set of shims, and eventually I ended up installing the second set.
What type of pads do you have on the Vette?

Thanks for the quick replies. To answer your questions, there's at least 1/4'' left on the pads.. The car has not been lowered and I'm running stock size tires 275/40 17 on stock rims. I don't know what kind of pads they are, as they were installed by the PO.
Will have to do a closer inspection, but it's going to have to wait until the weekend.

Did a more in depth inspection Sunday, and found my LF wheel hub has a slight flat spot when I rotate it. So I'm thinking this is my culprit.
I was planning to do new rotors and pads, so I'll change out the hub also.
Should I replace the right side also? As a general rule, I've always replaced brake and suspension parts in pairs.

Hubs
If there's the slightest concern, I'd change them both. You're going to have it up in the air anyway and your safety is worth more than the cost of an additional hub IMO. Besides that, I'm guessing the same things exerted on one side will have also affected the other and you get them both on a good playing field.
