Default Luggage space in a 1987 C4 coupe

Guys,

just a quick one.....how much luggage can you carry in a 1987 C4?

I'm keen to know the answer for roof on and roof off (so not a convertible)

Thinking of road trip, but the little lady doesn't travel "light" if you know what I mean

I'm thinking a soft sided bag, each, about the size of an airline carry-on would be about the most you'd fit...but can you with the top off as well (and stowed in the back)?

All comments appreciated

Cheers

I've got an '87 C4 coupe. It's a shoehorn job. Warning: I've never
traveled with top off and stowed in the back.

Several small soft-sided bags, not full so they can be shapped.

You can put some stuff on the floor just in front of the passenger's
seat, under the passenger's knees. I stow tools and tire changing stuff
there, and stow stuff we don't need en route where the tools were
in the boxes behind the seats.

It might be hard to convince the other half to travel "lite" but try to use motels/hotels that have guest laundry services. If you're traveling for something like a week or even longer, a careful selection of clothing can cut down what you carry. Lightweight shirts, tops, jeans, and maybe light jackets should work and small items can be rolled up and stuff in all sorts of spots. Move the seats up a notch and there is a fair amount of room behind the seats. Plastic bags are another good choice for storing stuff.

I agree that small soft bags will work the best. Don't forget the large storage area under the lift-out tray in the passenger side storage compartment!

I have an 88 convertible so there is even less space in mine than yours. Best thing to do is find a "softie" bag for you and a grocery bag for your better half. Correction, cut her bag in half and tell her anything she can get in there she can go. Laughing!!!!

This gentleman and his wife set the standard for C4 road trips in my humble opinion. It’s a great thread with incredible descriptions and photography as well. The first image in the first link shows just how much can be stowed in a C4.

I use two "GI size" duffel bags with wheels. More than enough room for a weeks worth of traveling.
For a two week trip, stop at a hotel with laundry service.

Looks like they planned well; I was surprised how much they were able to carry in the back of their C4.

several years ago, my wife, and I, and the dog came to florida for three months for the winter. we packed everything we needed including a dog crate in the hatch area of my 96 coupe. it was packed top to bottom - up to the rear glass. the rear view mirror was useless, and I pretty much depended on the door mirrors, but fortunately it was only a 15 hour trip. I was surprised just how much stuff you can cram into a C4. the C5 coupe, however, is the all time winner in the cargo carrying capacity.

according to some other sources, it has 13 cu ft of space.
someone from another post measured the space as:
32"x16"x12"

Shortly after I got my coupe I packed for a 2 week trip from Alabama that included a week of cold weather hunting in Virginia and a week of holiday visiting in New York. I had one large duffel with camouflage, and one large duffel with street cloths. Add in boots.shoes, bedding, bullets and three long guns and that was one full car!

But no old lady!

I am surprised by the posts indicating the coupe has limited luggage space.

I packed my 94 coupe to the brim when driving from NY to GA as part of a relocation and was pleasantly surprised at just how much I could get in there. I would see no reason why you could not put a decent size piece of hard sided luggage on the floor, with a couple of soft sided bags on top.

Also, I believe the dimensions listed above reflect the depth of the cargo space at the rear, not at the front, behind the seats. Has to be double that.

Thanks,

I'm sure the 94 has loads more room than an 87.

Also with the roof stowed, there's going to be even less...

Agreed... Roof storage makes the back almost completely useless.

Not sure I understand the difference between an 87 and a 94 though? Don't believe the form factor of the rear space ever changed.

I think it has plenty of space. I can fit my mountain bike in the back of the thing! You and your wife should have no problem carrying the necessary luggage for a trip.

If this pile of luggage were behind my C4, I'd know that fitting it would be no problem.

The other day I bought a little Weber grill and a charcoal caddy from Home Depot. I was going to put the plastic bag with the lighter and fluid under the top. But when I popped the catch and lifted the top I said to myself hey I bet I could fit the big things under there.

They fit! And I had a bucket of detailing things in there and a folding chair for shows. I'm sure you could get some soft sided bags under there but watch out for things like zipper pulls scratching the acrylic.

Dayum... Those are some seriously beautiful pics. Almost as beautiful as that Z. And I don't even like fly/racing yellow.
