Default 1996 Special Edition 6 speed

I am looking at a 96 with a 6 speed and 130K miles. Owner said it was always maintained and has a new clutch and brakes. I asked about the Opti spark and fuel pump and he said both are original and have not been replaced. What else should I be concerned about when buying a 1996 with relatively high miles. The asking price is $6,500.

Sounds like a great buy for an LT4!

Run a water hose over it and see if it floods from bad weather stripping around the top and hatch. Not a hard fix, but a common problem. If it has selective ride control, its a one year thing on the shocks and you cant get them anymore, so you will have to get stock shocks for it.
Plan on replacing the bushings in the rear suspension and maybe ball joints up front. Just normal wear stuff.

If the opti is working, don't worry about it. It's a later vented one anyway. Fuel pump is nothing at all to replace. Cheap and easy. If it runs great, get it. Make sure the ZF shifts through the gears smoothly with no grind. The ZF is probably one of the harder and most expensive parts to fix after the engine. Expect to have to replace parts that have rubber in them like weather stripping, brake hoses, etc.

I'd try to offer a bit less and see if you can get it for $6000. For that you have the screaming LT4 and a very desirable C4. Even if you have to rebuild the engine at 200K miles it's still worth it IMO.

I still don't get C4 buyers in 1996. Let's see..LT1 with an auto or a LT4 with the 6SP MT as a no (or low?) cost option. No brainer for me. LT4 all the way.

I have an LT4 car and the thing is a blast to drive!

If that car is clean I'd be all over it despite the higher miles. That's a great price.

speaking from experience; similiar car 96 LT4, similiar (little less) miles, mostly freeway:

rear spring was delaminating, replaced with new;

c beam mounting holes elongated, found good used, added c beam plates;

stock multi teck fuel injectors started leaking, actually one started
to leak, replaced with new Bosch III's;

Opti took a dump during the winter rains, traced problem to vacumn vent hoses that had been damaged, cut by serpentine belt

replaced one bad roller rocker that had jumped off valve stem;

cam had three bad lobes, replaced with new cam;

hose going to heater needed replacement

All new fluids, especially trans and rear end change out.

New battery

New fuel filter

I've done a ton of work on the car, but those were the things needing attention when I bought the car.

Special edition ?

Did you mean a silver collector edition? If so not a bad price for a LT4
