thoughts on these modded 85 & 84...
for some reason the "modded" early C4 vettes appeal to me. no idea why, but a lot of times i'm not sure if they are worth the asking price.
the first one is an 85, sadly the CL ad was pulled, but this is the video
posted of the car:
85, had a zz4 engine (said value was $5600 on engine)
hood of car modified w/ section painted black to accomodate (larger?) engine???
red paint is rough (but i didn't care), car was
advertised as street/track car, auto trans.
interior was: ROUGH. no carpet. digital dash converted to
analog guages, but backing looked like aluminum sheets (it looked
a bit DIY, but i liked it). assume AC/heat removed, it had a bunch
of toggles (not explained). it did have Simpson red race seats.
had regular 85 tires/rims (i prefer the updated look vs. the originals)
his price was $7900....i wasn't really sure if the car was worth that,
CL ad was active for a bit over a week and then he pulled it (maybe it sold)
so in my search, hoping he'd repost it (he hasn't), I saw this:
http://chicago.craigslist.org/sox/cto/4658511294.html
'84 for $10K, has "fresh 350 5.7L crate motor"
from pics, looks like the hood has black mod to accomodate this larger engine...car is yellow, nice seats (look new)....
just curious if these early C4s that have newer/hotter engine (which i know are pricey at $5000 and up)...does it make the car as valuable. I know for the 2nd car, when you're in the 10K range, i'm thinking of all the LT4s i see on the for sale forum....it's getting in that range....just curious thoughts....

Pass on both. There are plenty of C4s available stock or modified that offer way more car for the money.
Take your time and look at as many adds as you can to get an idea of the market.
You will find the car that's right for you. Patience.

Ah, no. A $2000 car with a "$5000 motor" is still a $2000 car.....an $8000 car with a "$5000 motor" is still an $8000 car. The motor is just a part of the total package, and not even the biggest part. It might have more value to a particular individual, but generally even then not to the supposed value of the engine.

For the most part, any money spent on mods is money down the toilet...OR money spent for your personal entertainment. It generally doesn't help resale and in the case of a car w/no carpet, etc. (the car above), a buyer has to wonder the quality of the work on the drivetrain. Would I pay $10k for that car? No way.

If nothing else, all of that steel, iron and aluminum is good for a few hundred in scrap.

I don't think it's worth any where near what he's asking. But.....Go ahead and offer him $2000.00 for that car he has at least $5000.00 of engine work into. (plus what ever he paid for it) I'm sure he'll jump at it! Seriously?

Maybe so, but some of the biggest lies are gas mileage, sex life, and money put into an engine.

This is why I save all my old parts. If I ever decide to sell mine, I can put it back to stock, sell it for what it's worth, then sell the go fast parts separately and recoop a little bit of my money. More than I would selling it all together...

If you find a modded car that you like and dont mind paying premium price go ahead and pop for it. In the end you are the only one that has to be happy.
That said, heed the advice above. Both seem overpriced to me.

There is a guy near me that has done a lot of work to his '87 and has had his car on CL for years. He says he's put $60,000 in to it and is asking $26,000. I feel bad for the guy, because of all the money he's put in to it will never come back.
I also wonder also how much of that $60,000 is labor? Labor is not a value added item.
I myself have an '84 that I have spent over $10,000 on repairs and updates, but I know my car is still worth @$5,000. I know I'll never get that back, but it's for the love of the car that I happily spend. Next year I will be ready to autocross it!

my modded 85 corvette racer is back on CL:
http://chicago.craigslist.org/sox/cto/4667108823.html
now he is sellig it w/o the engine for $3500...
still love the look of the DIY panel/dash...and analog gauges!
love those seats too....
originally he was selling it for $7900, from his original sale,
it appears the engine has gone done in value and the car w/o the
engine has gone up!!!! i think he originally said the engine was valued
at $5600
