Is there a lock out to prevent an accidental shift into reverse while shifting from 5th to 6th.

YES - lift ring on through '94 and on '95+ it's a crash through that's difficult, even a novice shouldn't have issues.

Yep at 80 mph you can get them into reverse.... I like the lock out ring but have a crash through now and haven't had any issues with either. Now the hurst short through on the black tag the eliminated the lock out ring but didn't mod the internals of the trans to be a true crash through got a little sketchy at times....
