Ac
Hi everyone, I got a black 93 6spd coupe. 140000 on the clock. 4 problems. 1. The AC was just converted to the new freon (R-something) and recharged. I am able to adjust the climate and the fan speed. A dye was used in the system when I had it recharged a few months back, and after 2000 miles, I took it back and it showed no signs of leaking. The problem is that it doesn't seem to get as cold as the setting shows (60 degrees), and when I turn the fan speed down, the air blowing from the vents seems to get warmer as well. I have an 03 ford ranger, and when I have it set to 60, I can turn the fan speed up and down, and the air is always cold, just doesn't blow as hard on lower fan setting (as expected). Any ideas? Problem 2: idle is erratic upon first start. If i start the car and drive it, it idles at 1100-1500 at stop signs. However, if I shut the car off and restart, it idles perfectly at 700rpms at stop lights. Weird huh? Problem 3: this just happened a few days ago... I noticed a puddle of coolant under the front passenger bumper after a long drive (car never overheated though). The car normally runs between 210 and 220 degrees, I can let it idle for hours and it never goes past 220 with the ac running. It appears that the coolant spilled out of the plastic overflow tank at the cap. Any ideas?
Problem 4
The led display on the dash is very dim. I can barely read it at night when the headlights are on. I do have an aftermarket stereo, and I'm sure that's the cause of the dimness and the sys warning light. U guys helped me a bunch in the past, and I really appreciate it. Anymore ideas on these probs are greatly appreciated. Ryan

I just went through some vacuums issues when repairing lines I found a line by distributer that was bad and think it goes to directional control for climate control! After repairing all these vacuum lines my A/C defroster and floor heat all worked better !! And A/C was colder out the dash cuz it wasn't trying to blow out defroster floor and dash! Just saying!

The parts book specifies the same part for all '84 through '96 Corvettes (part number 3033879). The '94 - '96 cars came with R-134a, so this does not appear to be true.

I remember having to buy an adaptor that screwed on to the port where the freon hose is connected to the line for re-charging. Im almost certain that I didn't have R 134 originally

With a setting of 60° on the HVAC programmer, the out put should be as cold as the system will allow (no heat) mixing.. so if the temperature warms at a lower fan speed this tells me there is "Icing" at the Evap coil.
Icing could be caused by really high Humidity, or an system possibly under charged.
Now for your recovery tank problem, the first thing to do is look for a leak, and or a possible pressure cap sealing problem.

Vacuum leaks...
Would those same hoses cause no flow from face level dash vents but still allow defrost and floor vents to flow air? Any assistance with troubleshooting my ac problem is greatly appreciated!

Don't know how my account is still working as I had it cancelled. But to answer your question, my problem started with warm air blowing from the "face level" vents. After I had it recharged and converted to R134, cold air began blowing from the "face level vents again (like it should). The only problem I have now is when I lower the fan speed, the air blowing from the "face level" vents appears to be warmer (not 60 degrees like the thermostat shows). I remember reading somewhere that the AC defaults to the defroster vent and floor vent when the charge is depleted- but I could be wrong. My best guess would be to have the system pressure tested and recharged if not leaking. I was lucky that mine wasn't leaking. It holds the charge, but still trying to figure out the new problem as stated above..

I'm currently doing a lot of investigating of Corvette AC configurations because I'm converting my '86 to a Denso compressor and changing to R-134a. I will be using the late ('94 - '96) R-134a condenser and evaporator because they are larger than the earlier R-12 versions.
