Default Collector Edition tire rim size

Just bought a 96 Collector convt. and will need new tires. The car only has 15,700 miles but am putting on new tires to replace the old run-flats. Noticed that the current tire sizes are incorrect so I started to try and measure the rim widths to see if the rims were the original rims.
Measuring from outside to outside with the tires on and measuring at the short vertical wall of the rim adjacent to the 17" diameter bead on the rim, through the spokes to the back side, I get appx. 10.50". Factory rims are supposed to be 8.5" front and 9.5" rear. With the 10.50" dimension I am measuring, it appears that all 4 rims are the 9.5" rim (rear). I know the correct way to measure is to take tire from rim, but I want to order tires before I do that.
Seems odd that a car with 15,700 miles would have rims that were not stock. Is there a better, more accurate way to measure rim width with tires on? Thanks

What tire size is shown on the tire placard on the inside edge of the driver's side door ? The CE convertible came with P255/45-17 on an 8.5x17 wheel up front and 285/40-17 in the rear on a 9.5x17 wheel.

Have you taken a wheel off the car to measure that way? The wheel size may be shown on the inside of one of the spokes.

You could also purchase another pair of CE rear wheels in 9.5x17 and then use 275/40-17 tires on all 4 corners. That will allow for tire rotation and that size will not be an issue with the speedo readout.

If they are stock rims, they should be marked on the backside.

Thanks for the info. I will try to see if the size is shown on the backside of the rim.
