Carfax?
I decided tonight to go through some paperwork which included what came with my 1992. It had an aftermarket stereo installed at Bestbuy in 2012 and noticed the mileage on the receipt said like 181,000. The odometer says about 76,000. I've heard good and about Carfax and wonder in anyone can enlighten me? Any good? Is there any better or cheaper service out there? My main concern is the mileage.

I would use this if I were interested in maybe VIN history:

Altho Carfax doesn't show everything - it does reveal the continuity of mileage and number of previous owners thru registrations and titling.

It could also be a recording error by the repair shop. Bad info in bad info out. Is there a "spike" in the mileage and is there any more recorded mileage on the Car Fax after that? Car Fax does not always tell the entire story. Not their fault. It can only list what's "reported".

As WVZR-1 pointed out, the CCM stores mileage and that value is displayed on the readout below the speedometer. It's entirely possible that the original CCM had been replaced with a used or remanufactured unit.
Reman CCM's need to have the original mileage programmed into them. But that has to be done within the first 100 miles of driving; after that, the CCM locks out any attempt to enter the mileage value from the old unit. So it could be that a replacement CCM was installed but the mileage was never updated.
Any good auto repair shop can use a scan tool to display the VIN (stored in the CCM). If that VIN is different than the one on the car, it's probably a used CCM.

I'm going with Best Buy screwing up when entering the mileage on the receipt. Sounds like, up to now, you felt the condition of the car matched that of a 76K car. I'm thinking there would be much more visible wear and tear on a vehicle that had over 181K mileage. If you want peace of mind just flip for a report. We use Autocheck at work. Either one will give you the answer you need. Luckily Best Buy doesn't report to those agencies because they would definitely red flag your title for possible odometer rollback if the DMV entered the lower mileage when you purchased it.
