Default 96 is new to me but I need to here her growl

Hello fellow Corvette owners. My first Corvette and it’s just killing me because she is out in the heated barn and its 3 degrees outside. I won’t drive her in the snow and just trudging through the 6” on the ground to get to her is a pain.
I am contemplating my first mod; more of a gotta have mod. My 96 is completely stock but I really need to hear her growl. I am concentrating on the Magnaflow mufflers with the LT1 tips from Corvette Central to keep her appearance close to stock, but my reading about exhaust brings me to the conclusion that I want to add an X pipe to balance the exhaust. I hate the crackle that you can get when decelerating and I can’t seem to find an X pipe that I know will fit. Can anyone give me some advice?
My 96 will be a fair weather ride so it must remain street legal. Heck I haven’t even crawled underneath to see what the original exhaust looks like. All I know is I can’t hear her!

Before you go with building a system, listen to a CORSA exhaust on an LT1/4. They make a full stainless system from the cats back that sounds great On the other hand, I loved the Flowmasters on my 84 too. Many think they are too loud but FAST is good, LOUD is better and FAST and LOUD is best!

I am concerned about the drone with the Flowmasters and remember the 40 series on my truck; It was bad! I have had 40 series, 50 series both heavy duty and Delta Flow. My current truck has a Borla installed and I have NO drone in the cab even in V4 mode.
I have listened to the video clips and really want a low rumble at idle and no drone while cruising, but if I open up the flow of fuel I want to be herd. It seems like the Magnaflow is the way to go for me. I am just not sure of the original configuration since she has been in the barn since I trailered her home. With just the test drive and a quick jaunt around the block it is quite evident that I need some more sound from my toy.
Some of the sound clips on YouTube have a crackle when the drivers lift the pedal and that is something I want to stay away from. Other that that I need rumble rumble!!!

I recently installed the Corsa chat back and absolutely love it. Nice growl at WOT with no drone at all.

Another option is to remove the resonator, and replace it with two sections of pipe. Adds to the growl without being obnoxious.

That the direction I was heading... I just need to clarify in my mind the system. On my 14 Silverado the original muffler was in the center of the exhaust system and the resonator was at the rear by the wheel well. On the Corvette the mufflers are in the rear with the tips on the mufflers. But the cat is in the center of the system correct? Where are the resonators then?

The cats are right after the headers, then the resonator then the muffler.

I just bought like 10 min ago the magna flow 16837 stainless system from Summit they matched a price from oscaroparts.com of 705.25 -10% for presidents day made it 630 something best price I could find. They are supposed to have minimal drone and are a heck of lot cheaper than the crosa system but I like to here my exhaust.

Thanks, that sounds logical. A diagram I pulled up online was identifying the cat as in the center of the exhaust system. I like the X pipe in that setup but think I can do it for less if I had the X pipe and Magnaflow mufflers and visit my local muffler shop. The guys there are a wiz at bending.

Here is the diagram. Is this freakin cold Michigan weather driving you bats*** too?
By the way - when the weather gets better you can drive directly to Corvette Central and pick things up. I am only 90 minutes away. From your direction you have the excuse to visit the Firekeeper's and Four Winds Casinos too

This picture that I took under my 96 was taken to show my Jackavette device but this is a good illustration of what the exhaust looks like as it starts to "Y" out. This would be a good place for the muffler shop to weld in a short crossover pipe (as long as it is not felt to be too close to the rear end).
If anyone is interested the Jackavette can be found at www.corvettegadgetman.com

If you want to save some cash then I think I agree about removing the resonators and replacing them with a pipe too. Then if it is not loud enough you can install muffler eliminators:

I wish I had a dollar for every time I passed the Fire Keeper... I use to drive out to Holland every day for work from here but my nerve injury has me on short term right now.
That's what I was thinking it looked like and my thought is first try to pop in an X pipe and remove the resonator and see how that sounds... It shouldn't take much for my convertible to sound better with the top down... Thanks!!!
Now, to find a good X pipe...

I have tried a couple mufflers and muffler eliminators on my '94's. I didn't have the "crackle" when backing off like many have commented on. I did not have an X pipe. I had the rest of the system stock.

I have read that the '92 - '93 LT1's crackle and the '94 - '96 don't because of the sequential fuel injection in the later cars. I am not sure that this is the case, but all I have read so far seems to support the year differences.

I liked the muffler eliminators. They were a great low rumble at idle. Best I have heard. At cruise they weren't too bad, and under throttle they were LOUD. You can regulate the volume with the throttle when you want to, but they are too loud for many people.

On my current '95 I am going to try a Corsa system since I found one pretty cheap. As soon as it warms up a little to work on it without freezing my xxx off.

Good luck with your choice.

The first mod I did to my LT4 was the exhaust. I removed the rear mufflers. It was a touch loud, and a lot of resonance, especially on acceleration. Then I discovered the dual in/out mufflers from Magnaflow. Had it welded in place of the stock resonator. The muffler, some call resonator, has an x-pipe incased in a muffler shell with soud absorbing material. It toned the exhaust note really well.

Thank you all for your suggestions: I still think the X pipe is going to be my first mod. I haven’t ordered one yet due to the question on size… Corvette Central doesn’t seem to sell them. I see a post on Monster Flow X pipes on a C4 but when I called they don’t seem to answer their phone. I will pay the price for the MagnaFlow once I determine the size needed if I don't find better.

Any input on size needed for a LT1? I think 3" inlet/outlet might do it...

Also best price if anyone has purchased lately.

Your stock pipes are 2.75" and cut down to 2.5" at the resonator and the mufflers.

That is what I have been finding in my searches... I went and ordered a 3" Magnaflow X pipe. That way the X pipe won't cut down on the flow. If anything restricts the flow it will be by the original pipe size and not the X pipe itself. Thank you!

I have eliminators on my 93 and it does drone when cruising, but not so bad that it drive my wife or I nuts.

As for the crackle, what's wrong with having that?
