Some questions for C4 guys (L83)
1. How many years was the L83 the motor for the Corvette and did the horsepower change at all any of the years?? I believe the horsepower was 205??
2. I'm assuming the L98 replaced the L83. In your guys opinion how much of an improvement was it??
I'm basically asking because a friend found a nice 84 but is torn between picking it up or looking for a nice L98 Vette. How bad would an L98 put a beating on an L83?? Performance is pretty important to him. Thanks guys

L83 in the C4 was only 1 year (1984)
The '82 C3 had the same engine.

He told me it's an 84 auto Z51 but he thinks he wants to wait and try to find a late model L98.

My 89 has 240.
The 88s and ups have the 113/ZZ4 aluminum heads, which are the more desirable head, and can be ported to respectable numbers.
85s as a side note, have forged pistons and are the only year with them.
86s and up have hyd roller cams, and a single piece rear main seal. 85s don't.
The car's computer also got better as time went on.

They start at 230 in 85... and at the end of the run in 91, had 250 if I remember right.

Anytime.
85s also had a higher stall torque converter than the other C4s. (I think it was a 2k stall out of the box)
There's also two gear ratios and two dana rear ends.
The standard which is the Dana 36, with a 2.53 gear
and the performance Dana 44 with a 3.07
in the autos at least.

From the research I've done, apparently the stick shift cars are the D 44 cars.
Ratios are determined with the RPO codes.

Your friend get his beating by a 90 Corvette, and decided to give up on his Nissan?

Tel him to test drive a few unless he is to busy counting his money I would suggest a ZR-1. But if it were me I would buy a 2015. The new ones look the best.
