C4 Rebody (General Discussion)
(July 2016 Update on page 3)
Hey guys, just bought my first vette. It's an 86 convertible with 38k miles that I picked up for real cheap. So cheap in fact, I have half a mind to cut it up and rebody it. The other half tells me to paint it black and pick up a hard top. Anyway, just wanted to say hey and get your thoughts on rebody ideas. What would you like to see?
My new toy.
Rebody sketch.
My baby. LS1 swapped RX7. (New to Corvettes, but not the SBC)

I pulled the trigger on this one for the very fact that it would be a good candidate for a rebody. It's basically a frame with a fiberglass body, and it's a convertible. I'm not looking for "something different". I'm looking to create something, not buy something.

You will make a cheap purchase worth absolutely nothing. Clean it up a bit and sell for a profit. Many of us have learned to just buy what you want and never restore a basket case.
That 86 looks above average. I would spend time doing mechanical work and keep a vette a vette.

"No..." Very expansive, thanks. If I could scrape together a cool $300k I would pick up that Ferrari F12 I've been drooling over.

However, it's unlikely that a forum dedicated to the C4 (which most of us are pretty obsessive about) is going to get too excited about a rebody kit. Much as if you went to your RX7 forum and said you were going to rebody your RX7 to look like a Corvette.
I guess it probably also matters as to how radical your rebody is too. The sketch is fairly vague - is it still going to be a C4 Corvette when you're done? It kinda looks like you're planning on winding up with a C5?

You will also find its not exactly a frame with a fiberglass body as the C3's were. The drive train is one part, the frame has the body panels bonded on.
Now if you going to do it please post progress pics as you go will be interesting if nothing else. Good Luck

Melting Slicks
Sell it to someone if you don't like it. But as said its your car do what you want with it.
I doubt your going to find people on here voting to butcher a nice car.

It'd be one thing if it's a beat and battered car who's body work was washed up. Or if it had a totaled VIN, etc etc.
Want my advice? Buy a really wrecked one. broken fenders the works. One that's not going to be saved.
Don't cut up a good car.

C4s are cool cars. If you want to hack one up, plenty of junkers out there....
FWIW, if you want to have fun, drop an LS in a Porsche 944...

This is what happens when you need your Corvette to look like a Ferrari. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chevrolet-Corvette-Convertible-/111620798994?forcerrptr=true&hash=item19fd1e3a12&item=111620798994 And this is what other Corvette owners say about that wonderful idea. https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...inly-that.html It's your car, maybe look at a facelift to a 91 look if the coin is burning a hole in your pocket.

You'll probably find the answers your looking for in a forum about automotive design or concept cars. This forum is more about driving, fixing, and loving these cars. As a design concept, I will say this...very interesting. There was a program on cable recently about a group of car designers who had to take a car or truck and transform or modify it into something else. Can't remember what it was called. Interesting show. They redesigned a camero in one episode.

He's talking full redesigned body, you can buy a Ferrari for what it would cost to do it right. I see it like the Ferrari GTO body kits they put on 240Z 's. No matter what they call it, it's still a 240Z, and I can tell you that even with a SBC in it, it's nothing compared to a C4. I look at those "very rare GTO tribute " cars that you can find on EBAY every week and laugh, especially at those who would bid on one. Calling it a Ferrari or what ever doesn't make it so.

If you want a project, go to bringatrailer.com You should be able to "flip" that nice Corvette and put the money into something different that won't waste your talent on butchering that car, which nobody will appreciate!

I don't know if you realized it, but an 86 convertible is a factory designated "Pace Car". (79th Indy 500)
My vote is don't ruin it!
I restored one and it came out beautiful.

Nope... nada... no way.
There have been too many Corvettes chopped up ending up scrapped with incomplete ideas and resources.

Just thought I'd bump this thread back up for those who don't mind a guy hacking up an old fiberglass car that was converted from a coupe to a convertible in the 80's and hasn't run for over a decade... I am planning on retaining the corvette flavor, if that's any consolation. Things are starting to get interesting, so I thought I'd share...
Here she is all stripped down with a 5.3 swapped in for mockup purposes.
Walk around video:
And here she is before I poured foam all over her.
And here she is now. Just barely started roughing it out, and eager to do some more carving this thanksgiving break.
Short video of how I left her Sunday night:
I'll be adding more foam to the front and rear this weekend, so I should have a pretty decent update this Sunday. I'm planning on using C7 head lights/tail lights and drawing heavy influence from the Corvette Daytona Prototype. However it turns out... it will certainly be low
