LT4s usually have red painted intake manifolds and are found only in '96 six speed manual trans C4 Corvettes (and some special production F-bodies).

Ah, ok. Thanks. This is a '96 auto. It's rated at 330/340hp in the VIN decoder - is that a standard engine then?

All factory LT-4 intakes were red...unless the owner painted or replaced the intake, it is likely an LT-1. What year is the car? If it's not a '96 with a manual trans, it is likely not an LT-4 unless someone modded the car and made some changes.

if it isn't an LT4 then it isn't factory rated at 330/340. I believe stock LT1's in 96 ran 300HP and 330 FT/LBS.

I don't think they put LT4's in automatic cars. I guess this could have been a special order. From the plate on the throttle, it appears to be an LT-1 with a 300 HP rating.

Oh, I got it. The tech specs in the vin decoder list both engines generically. I misread it. I was kind of hoping I had a sleeper LT4 there that I should consider snapping up.

Something odd is going on with the decoder... The '96 auto is stock with a 300 HP LT1 and the '96 six speed with a 330 HP LT4. The engine and transmissions came as a package. No 300 HP six speeds or 330 HP autos in 1996. There was a Chevy Performance kit to upgrade the top end of an LT1 to LT4 specs but, it included the red painted intake along with heads and a cam and roller rockers.

Nah, it's my fault. My hopes got in the way of reality!

No big deal. I've been there before. Always wishful thinking.

It's a good looking Polo Green car, if anyone is looking for one. Fairly high mileage, but would be great for a DD, I bet.

LT4 was only matched up to one transmission - a manual 6 speed.

The eighth? character in the vin defines it. "p" is LT1 and "5" is LT4

All that needs to be said.

Over the years, lots of people have done engine swaps and/or intake manifold swaps.
The VIN is the proof in how the car left the factory.

Although not in question this time, this is especially true when looking at a '96 Grand Sport.
Lots of people at there trying to sell a non GS car as a Grand Sport.
The GS had a unique VIN just for this reason.

Not from the factory, no.

There has been at least 1 and probably more LT4 cars converted to automatic.
But they rolled off the assembly line with a manual tranny.

The VIN for the car in the ad the OP posted confirms the car is an LT1.
And nowhere in the ad is the seller trying to fool anybody into believing it is an LT4.

According to my C4 trivia source, the LT1 torque was bumped to 340# ft. in the last 2 or possibly 3 years of production (not that it matters in this context).

Yup... That is what happens when you go off memory. I should have looked that up before posting.

Good catch.
