Help with installing exhaust tips please
I bought a set of zr1 style exhaust tips from corvettemods and I cant figure out how to mount them.
Unless Ive got weird size exhaust pipes it makes no sense.
The tips that were on it when I bought the car used set screws and did fine.
The new tips have a slot cut in them on the side towards the car with a bolt running thru 2 welded on loops on the outside.
Logically I just tighten this bolt down to snug the tips on the exhaust pipes but these suckers have a huge gap all around the pipe.
The part that's throwing me is it came with 2 metal strips and no instructions. Are these strips to take up the slack? Do I bend them around the exhaust pipes then slide the tips on? If that's the case then why are there 2 strips in place of 4 since there are 4 tips?
Tried calling corvettemods and got their answering machine on all extensions so figured Id see if this was something that's common that someone might know the answer to.
Trying to get these on between rain blast. Thanks for any help.

Ok on ecklers site it shows the same kit and this note :
"Shims Provided For Small Diameter Pipes"
Now to figure out how to use 2 shims to do 4 tips. Fun fun.

On corvettemods site :
No instructions, 4 bolts and nuts and 2 shims.
Trying to find another vendor that might have downloadable instructions.
Cover those boring OEM style muffler tips with these sleek looking ZR-1 Style Exhaust Tips triple plated in chrome. This mod is quick and easy with a short 15 minute installation with no modifications to your exhaust. Easy to follow instructions and all mounting hardware included with each set of 4.

Found instructions on mid Americas site. Not very detailed but Im getting a better idea of how this works.
Interesting so far with what I found. No lets go with the theory that non of the companies selling this kit (they all have it so far) don't have instructions in the box.
1. Corvettemod - doesn't even mention the shims. Doesn't have instructions on the site that I can find.
2. Ecklers - mentions the shim but doesn't have instuctions on their site that I can find.
3. Mid America - Has the tips, has the info displayed and has the instructions. Course now I realize its their tips I bought from corvettemods since the picture on corvette mods site is of a car with mid Americas tag on it

Well heres some of what Im dealing with. This is factory tips and what the old aftermarket tips looked like on the car. I think you can see why I removed them the first day I owned the car

Go to your auto supply store and buy a short piece of exhaust tube the same diameter as your current tube. The cut off 1-1/2" lengths...four of them. Then make a cut thru the 1-1/2" section. You can now place this over your existing exhaust tube and slide the ZR1 tip over this and tighten the bolt. If this is still too sloppy and will not tighten, then add a second ring or partial until you get a snug fit.
A cut off wheel on a grinder will make this a quick job.

I freaking give up.
Im taking it to a muffler shop as soon as I find one open somewhere and let them weld the damn things on. This is stupid.

And the above pic is AFTER I went and bought shims. So just barely tightening the thing down and the stupid bolt broke. Welds don't look much better on the loops on the tips to be honest or Id dig up some replacement bolts.
I miss my power effects exhaust I had on my 86. Bolt up and pure joy. But they aren't making anymore systems right now

What I don't get is why sell tips for a 2 1/2" pipe when the pipes on the mufflers are 2 1/4". I bought a set off fleebay, the same ones all the vendors say will fit 85 on. The stainless is good thick metal so tightening really means your only going to snug them up a little bit. I bought some 2 1/4 id 2 1/2 od pipe and made some spacer rings that I can tac weld to the pipes then mount the tips. One of these days I will get around to swapping out my systems and see if this works.

At least crappy ones on there to start with had set screws that could tighten down to any size pipe for the most part.
Hmm.... set screws. Light bulb just came on folks. Afk for a bit.

Well Ive got an idea on how to do this. But I lack a vise so Im going to see if I can get my stepdad to help me with this.
What Im going to try is cutting off ends of the old tips. They fit inside the new tips. Then drill 2 holes in each of the new tips to line up with the holes in the old tips which are threaded. So I put the old tip pieces inside as a sleeve (VERY tight this way) and run the screws thru the new tips into the old tip pieces threads. Once tightened down I don't see this suckers moving.
Its a theory at least. We don't have a muffler shop within 30 miles of here.

Well just got home. VERY fun drive and success on getting the tips mounted
I'll post some pics of them after I bend the factory exhaust pipes a bit more since they are a bit off pipe wise.
Ended up cutting the old tips to use as a mounting method for the new tips. Worked great.

exhaust tips
Didn't like the look of the ends of the exhaust tips on my '89. Bought 2 chrome 2 1/2" duel tips on ebay. Took it to a muffler shop. They trimmed off the 45 degree angle on the stocks and had the new tips welded on with a perfect straight look under the rear bumper and they stick out about 1 1/2". very satisfied with the look.
