Default No all season tires in 285/35/17 anymore?

My wife drives a 93 lt1 6spd back and forth from work everyday it's a 45 min drive each way. She loves the car. But the rear tires are in need of replacement. The problem is that we live in the north and even this week temps are just above 40. When there is more than an inch on the ground she drives a 4x4 but I need to keep her on an all season tire.

I really wanted to just replace her Michelins with the same tires as they have been a great all season tire. But discounttiredirect and tirerack no longer stock them in the factory 285/35/17 size!

I would hate to have to sell the car for lack of a decent all season tire choice.

I also do not want to buy another set of wheels.

So is there another size that will fit that I can get an all season tire in or another company that makes a good all season in the factory size.

I have read all about the conti DW tires and they seem great if it wasn't so cold it is here but they are not designed to be driven in under 40 degree weather.

You might consider the 275/40/17 tires. They came on all 4 wheels for all the '88 to '92 cars and the '93 to '96 if they had the performance suspension option. There are a few more choices in that tire size.

I have run them on my '94's and '95 that originally had 285/40/17 rear tires and do not notice a difference to the original size.

Good luck.

The OEM rear tire size for the 93 and later cars was 285/40-17. The rear wheel size was a 9.5x17.

A 275/40-17 tire can be used up front, but the front wheel size (8.5x17) may be bit too small to use that size but they will work. Wont be any problem on the rear wheels.

You will find that most all of the high performance type of tires are advertised to not be used in cold temps or on snow or ice covered roads. A qucik search of the Tire Rack website turned up these BF Goodriuch tires

Thanks so much all! Looks like I am going with a 275/40/17 on tire rack the Conti Extreme Contact DWS got good reviews and is all season rated for the cold. Obviously she won't drive in heavy snow or ice in this car but I wanted a tire that can be driven in the cold tundra we live in.

Good point on wheel width - We run the 275/40/17 on the rear - 245/45/17 on the front.

From the factory the late model C4 would have:

Rear: 285/40-17 on 9.5" rim
Front: 255/45-17 on 8.5" rim

OR

275/40-17 on 9.5" rims on all 4 corners

ZR1:
Rear: 315/35-17 on 11" rims
Front: 275/40-17 on 9.5" rims

I have Cooper Zeon RS3-A on my 90 which are reasonably priced but they don't make them in 285/35-17.

Permitted tire sizes on the rear 93 are 275, 285, 295 / 35, 40, 45 by 17 Very little selection on 285 tires and don't know about 295. Have been running 275 40 17s on rear of my 94 and they work great. They won't work on the front unless you go to 9.5 inch wheels -- which you could do.
