Default Rear Differential Question

How can you tell if the differential is what the person selling it said it is? In other words if I have someone who has a dana 36 3.07 differential what or where should I look that would confirm that it is a dana 36 3.07 differential other than taking the person word.

There's many ways - to be sure it's an OE/GM/DANA build you need to get all of the information off of the ring gear. The ring gear will have a tooth count, part # and likely a production date on it. You confirm the bolt pattern for the cover to confirm it's a D36 and on some the ratio, GM/DANA number and production date is etched in the bottom of the differential. It's not on all.

Count the teeth on the ring gear/pinion. You need to check for fit between the pinion shaft and the pinion gears. It would be wise to have someone that understands check it for you if you're unsure.

You should find 43/14, 41467 & 41474 maybe 43/14 for sure.

The fastest way is with the speedometer. The 3.07 around 70 MPH you would be doing 2,000 RPMS, with the 2.59 you would be doing 1,600 RPMS.

This has been discussed here to death, the search tool would give you faster results.

You do NOT want an '84 - If the ring gear showed a production date (I believe most will) of '83 or '84 you want to just leave it alone.

The search function of this forum leaves much to be desired. When I search for differentials all I got was garbage. I got better results searching Google which gave me good links back to this forum. I thank those who were patience and posted good information.

Yes - the differential gears (pinions/side and the case) were issues. If an '84 failed the case required replacement and also the short-axles. Did they all? Certainly not but it's enough of an issue that you would avoid the purchase of one if you were buying. If it broke you could purchase no parts. '84 original would require either original '84 parts or the update of the later case/gears along with the later short-axles.
