Burning Brakes
I have no idea how accurate the link below is as I have already found some information that is not completely correct. However, it may help in this situation.

"Mike100" answered your question directly, "cuengineer" reinforced that with the why. Any hint to change the hardware to something that is "older" engineering/configuration I'd think foolishness.
Buy a correct fit and be sure that what you're buying is OE/GM I'd think should be a requirement.

Melting Slicks
See the below how to identify what roof you are looking at.
I have a 89-96 glass targa roof on my 85, however it is a real pain fitting the brackets just right.
It helps to have a woman to sit on the targa to depress the weatherstripping, fit the rear targa bolts then the front to targa and then secure to the A pillar.
You have to remove the sunvisors, mirror and header panel trim piece to fit the bracket. Then you need the header trim for the year the roof is for or drill new holes.
One the roof fits AND you have hosed the car and made sure it doesnt leak, then remove the targa refit the header trim panel mirror and sunvisors.
I recommend buying a new glass top, they are either cracked or going to crack soon. With a new one you should have many years left and you can select what year roof
