Well rim size is what we need to know to make recommendations.
As for my old 255-50r16's I run BFGoodrich g-Force Sport COMP-2 tires but later years have larger wheels and have different options to choose from.

I just put Nitto 555’s on my ’96. The offer a relatively smooth ride and have great traction. The shop doing the installation said they were easy to balance out as well.
I was going to spend $1,200 on Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 but grew tired of waiting for a full set to become available. Purchased the Nitto’s for half of what the GY’s cost, and, the Nitto’s are proving to be a capable, well riding tire.

I'll say this, if you a weekend warrior or a nice driver buy the tires you can afford. If you like to have fun, buy sticky expensive tires.
Last Friday I drank the Kool-Aid. The Nittos NT05 lasted 10,000 miles, and IMO they suck. I went ahead, and bought again Eagle F1 GS-D3 tires. They are expensive, the first set I had lasted 22,000 miles, and they have great traction on dry and on heavy rainy days.
So go to tiretrack.com or americastires.com, and do your tire combo search, and hook it up.

I just installed a set of Mickey Thompson Street Comp tires from Summit Racing (315 35r17 and 275 40r17). So far I like them better than the Goodyear GSD3s I had.
They have better steering response, good ride and are very quiet. I am extremely satisfied with them.l

You might want to check out Conti Extreme Contact DW or DWS also.

Actually there is a Chinese or something tire for it. I cant remember the brand name but that's what the previous owner had on it.
Unless I want to run race/drag/autocross tires. Amazing selection of those actually.

After the OEM Goodyears wore out on the 88 I replaced with Firestone Firehawks. Was not the quietest tire but I was stuck with them. Eventually replaced with BF Goodrich G Force Super Sport AS, 275/40ZR-17, back in 2009 from Discount Tire. Very nice quiet and curve grabbing tires. 10,000 miles in 6 years and have not dry rotted yet.
